3rd Annual Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis (GCMA) Meeting
Second Announcement
You are invited to participate in the 3rd Annual Gait and Clinical Movement
Analysis (GCMA) Meeting, hosted by the Motion Analysis Laboratory of
Children's Hospital, San Diego, and sponsored by the North American Society
of Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis (NASGCMA). The purpose of the
Society is to stimulate and advance scientific knowledge, professional
interaction, and the exchange of ideas among Society members, as related to
gait and human movement analysis in clinical and research settings. The
meeting will be held on April 15-18, 1998 at the Hyatt Islandia Hotel in
San Diego's Mission Bay area. Tutorials will be offered on Wednesday
afternoon, April 15th, and the scientific program will commence on the
morning of Thursday, April 16th. The last presentation of the meeting is
scheduled to conclude on Saturday, April 18th at 4:30pm.
This posting includes information about the meeting program, registration,
hotel and travel accommodations, and other activities. Additional details
were included in a registration packet mailed previously, and are available

Tutorial #1 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Practical Electromyography for Biomechanists and Movement Analysts
Instructors: Richard V. Baratta, Ph.D. and Moshe Solomonow, Ph.D.
Purpose and Course Content: This tutorial is designed to help the
biomechanist with little knowledge of signal processing to avoid pitfalls
commonly encountered with EMG and to report the use of EMG in ways
acceptable to peer reviewers experienced in EMG recording and processing.
The tutorial covers theoretical and practical aspects of EMG signal
acquisition, processing, interpretation, and reporting. It begins with a
brief introduction to the history of electromyography and basic muscle
physiology and continues with practical implementation. The course is
devoted to practical implementation and is subdivided into sections
including electrodes, amplifiers, filtering and recording, safety,
processing in the time and frequency domains, normalization,
interpretation, and common pitfalls.
Intended Audience: Biomechanists, gait and movement analysts or students
using or intending to use electromyography to study movement.
Prerequisite Knowledge: Basic muscle and movement physiology.

Tutorial #2 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm
A Primer for Understanding Joint Kinetics
Instructors: Thomas M. Kepple, M.A. and Nasreen Haideri, M.E.
Purpose and Course Content: This tutorial is designed to provide an
introduction to the equations of motion and their traditional use in
clinical biomechanics to compute joint forces, moments and powers. The
tutorial will discuss the advantages and limitations of the traditional
methods and introduce an alternate (generalized) method that can directly
couple the equations of motion in order to determine the influence that the
moment at one joint will have on other anatomical segments. As an example,
the generalized equations of motion will be derived for a simple two-link
planar model, and will be used to illustrate the inherent relationships
between joint kinetics and kinematics. The clinical implications of the
approach will also be discussed.
Intended Audience: Clinicians responsible for interpreting motion analysis
data, and engineers interested in developing innovative methods for
analyzing human movement.
Prerequisite Knowledge: Familiarity with the use of joint forces, moments,
and powers in movement analysis; familiarity with the standard equations of
motion; basic algebra and trigonometry.

The meeting will be held at the Hyatt Islandia Hotel on San Diego's Mission
Bay. The Hyatt Islandia is approximately 10 minutes by taxi from San Diego
International Airport (Lindbergh Field). The room rate for single or
double occupancy is $139.00 per night (plus 10.5% city occupancy tax).
Reservations must be received before March 7, 1998 to assure availability
of rooms. Please call (619) 224-1234 for reservations and identify
yourself as a participant in the NASGCMA meeting. The discounted room rate
will also be honored two days before and two days after the meeting dates.
United Airlines will offer a 10% discount on full coach fares, or a 5%
discount on United, United Express, or Shuttle by United published fares,
when tickets are purchased subject to applicable restrictions.

NCMRR Workshop on Gait Research and Grants
The National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR) will be
sponsoring an NCMRR Workshop on Gait Research and Grants on the afternoon
of Thursday, April 16, 1998 in conjunction with the 3rd Annual GCMA
Meeting. The mission of NCMRR is to foster development of scientific
knowledge needed to enhance the health, productivity, independence, and
quality of life of persons with disabilities. This workshop serves as a
follow-up to the "Gait Analysis in Rehabilitation Medicine" workshop held
in Arlington, Virginia on September 26-28, 1996. The San Diego workshop
will include: a review of the Arlington workshop report; a review of NCMRR
related activities; a brief overview of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) research grant process; and the opportunity for input by workshop
participants to highlight areas for future research initiatives.
The NCMRR workshop will be held at the Hyatt Islandia San Diego, in
conjunction with the GCMA meeting, at no additional charge.
***Pre-registration by March 2, 1998 is required. Registration materials
received after March 2, or on-site registrations, will not be accepted.
Registration is limited and will be assigned by a random selection
