    Research Engineering Internship Program

    Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
    Baylor University Medical Center
    Dallas, Texas

    The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Baylor University Medical
    Center in Dallas, Texas is now accepting applications for an opening in
    its Engineering Research Internship Program beginning May 1998.

    The intern will be devoted to the Motion and Performance Laboratory and
    work directly under the laboratory director. The Motion and Performance
    Laboratory is responsible for clinical assessment of motion dysfunctions
    and is an active research facility in orthopaedic and sports
    biomechanics. The facility boasts a high-speed five camera Motion
    Analysis System, one force platform, a 10 channel of EMG system,
    treadmill, and O2 consumption equipment. The laboratory employs a full
    time Ph.D. engineer, a research kinesiologist, and part-time graduate
    and undergraduate students. The majority of the internís time will be
    devoted to a project developing a dynamic six degree-of-freedom knee
    measurement device. The ideal candidate must be knowledgeable in the
    musculoskeletal system (specifically the knee joint), linear algebra,
    basic electronics and a computer programming language (preferably C or
    Visual Basic). In addition, the candidate must be a self starter,
    motivated and be willing to participate in the testing of clinical and
    research patients.

    In order to qualify, a candidate must be currently enrolled in a
    Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or related graduate program. A
    stipend of $1250 per month will be provided as well as some funds for
    necessary supplies and equipment. The duration of the internship
    program will be 12 months and the candidate will be expected to work
    approximately 30 hrs/week.
