  • Composite Femur

    Dear all,

    Thanks to everyone who replied to my posting.

    It seems that the composite femur has substantial value in the
    experimental lab. It provides high repeatability, and in a great
    number of ways can approximate the mechanical behaviour of a fresh
    femur. I will determine if a composite femur is truly useful for my
    purposes as I plough my way through the many references you have
    provided me with.

    I'm interested in the feasibility of carrying out a strain gauge
    analysis on a composite femur. Can anyone direct me to a study that
    details the validity of such experiments? Has anyone used composite
    femora for stress/strain analyses? if so, were the results
    acceptable?

    Dear Paul,

    I'd be interested to hear what other people have to say. I recently
    did an study of impact loading on lower legs. We used cadaver
    specimens and fiberglass composite specimens from Pacific Research
    Labs. We measured strain on the posterior side of the tibia specimens
    using a rosette strain gage. While strains were not equal between the
    two (cadaver and composite), they were of the same magnitude and
    reproducible. Please fill me in on any other enlightening responses.

    The name of the company is Pacific Research Laboratories, Inc. They

    I believe Harry McKellop (USC - Los Angeles) did some work in this
    area in the early '80's using the composite femur from "Sawbones" in
    Vashon Island, OR. I also think researchers at Wright Dow Corning
    (now Wright Manufacturing) in Memphis, TN were working with using
    strain guaging of theses ame composite femora for mechanical testing.
    Densil Miller at Sawbones (Pacific Research) should also be able to
    help you.

    There have been several studies that have looked at composite femur.
    Certainly strain gage analysis is possible with composites and I
    believe you will find information on this in the publications. I think
    the larger issue is the biological one.

    Dear Paul,

    I know of two studies in which composite femora have been usedvwith
    strain gauges.

    1) Otani, Whiteside and White 1993. Strain distribution in the
    proximal femur with flexible composite and metallic femoral components
    under axial and torsional loads. J Biomed Mater Res, 27, 575-585.

    2) Cristofolini, Viceconti, Cappello and Toni 1996. Mechanical
    validation of whole bone composite femur models.

    I also strain gauged composite bones in my PhD study to look at mid
    shaft femoral strains and how they were affected by different
    intramedullary nails. My results were always repeatable unlike those
    found by Otani et al.

    I think that composite bones can be used successfully in strain gauge
    studies, particularly when comparing 2 different implants. But it
    should always be remebered that there will be some difference between
    the strains measured on real bone and that the fibre orientation of
    the composites might affect the results.

    Dear Paul

    I am sure you will recieve many replies, but perhaps not so many
    from this far away. I have used the composite femora for strain
    analysis and was quite happy with the performance. Your best best is
    to visit the homepage of the standardised femur
    (http://www.cineca.it/prometeo/stand_fem.htm) where they have
    published a list of relevant published papers, looking at their
    properties and comparing the performance with cadaveric bone etc.

    The big advantage has to be the reproducibility (as well as the easy
    of strain gauging).
