Dear Biomch-L readers,
Up to now, the Biomch-L fileserver utilities have been for ASCII-formatted
files only. As of this morning, a number of UUENCODE/UUDECODE utilities
for processing binary data are available, which can be retrieved with the
standard LISTSERVer command:
SEND file_name file_type BIOMCH-L
either interactively (BITNET only) or in the main body of an email note
to LISTSERV@HEARN.BITNET or LISTSERV@NIC.SURFNET.NL. Since there may be
incompatible versions available via other lists at HEARN.BITNET, the list-
name BIOMCH-L should *not* be omitted in this command, lest you might inad-
vertedly retrieve another version. The following files from the Public
Domain SIMTEL database are available:
UUENCDEC DOC Documentation for both UUENCODE and UUDECODE
UUDECODE BAS A BASIC program for use on an IBM-compatible PC for
generating a PC program UUDECODE.COM for decoding
UUENCODE UUE A UUENCODEd version of PC program UUENCODE.COM, to
be decoded with program UUDECODE.COM
I hope that the availability of these tools will result in more users making
available (draft) reports even if typeset with non-ASCII characters as in
Word-Perfect, MS-Words, etc. Since there are various incompatible versions
of UUENCODE/UUDECODE, I would suggest that any non-ASCII items offered for
storage on the Biomch-L fileserver be UUENCODEd with the present version before
being submitted to any of the three moderators. Similarly, retrieved UUENCODEd
items from the Biomch-L fileserver should be processed with UUDECODE.COM as
created according to the instruction above.
At some future time, I hope to provide similar utilities for the Macintosh
(BINHEX) and for other systems if there is sufficient demand for them.
With kind regards -- Herman J. Woltring, Eindhoven/NL
