  • Summary: Gait analysis parameters/call for data

    Dear Biomch-L subscribers,

I'm looking for relationships between some gait analysis parameters,ie:
cadence (stride frequency)and body height vs stride length.
Could you please help me by sending to me updated data and relevant
    literature and references.
    Thank you.
    Stephane Boyer.

    Stephane Boyer;

Frank Todd of the University of California Biomechanics Laboratory in Berkeley
studied the time and distance parameters of the gait cycle over most of his
career. A summary of his conclusions was published in a paper entitled:

"Variations in the Gait of Normal Children"
Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery
    Vol. 71-A, No. 2, pp 196-204, February 1989

If you are interested in this but have trouble finding a copy, please let me
know and I will send you a reprint.

    Subject: Gait Data

    Dear Stephane Boyer,
I read your request to BIOMCH-L subscribers (see below). I think I can
help you with some references, and possibly also some data. Some of my
studies contain descriptions of spatio-temporal data of gait. The
following studies might be of interest:

    * Zijlstra W, Rutgers AWF, Hof AL, Van Weerden TW. Voluntary and
involuntary adaptation of walking to temporal and spatial constraints.
    Gait & Posture 1995; 3: 13-18.
    * Zijlstra W, Prokop T, Berger W. Adaptability of leg movements during
normal treadmill walking and split-belt walking in children. Gait &
    Posture 1996; 4: 212-221
    * Hof AL, Zijlstra W. Comment on "normalization of temporal-distance
parameters in pediatric gait". Letter to the editor. Journal of
    Biomechanics 1997; 30:299-299.

The above papers all contain references to older literature. The second
paper is a study of the effects of body size on human stepping patterns.
I hope these studies will be of interest. Let me know when I can help
    you more.
    With kind regards, Wiebren Zijlstra.

Both George Gorton ggorton@shrinerspfld.org from Springfield and Sam
Augsburger sfaugsburg@aol.com from Lexington presented talks concerning
normal kinetics at last year's NASCGMA conference. Abstracts are in Gait
and Posture. I'm sure they have this data, as each looked into normalizing
to leg length or height and may be willing to share it. I only have 23
normals right now and I don't think that would be enough to help you, but
if you want to start collecting from multiple sources, I could contribute
    mine.

    Hi:

I will be taking some gait data over the next couple of months, but
unfortunately, I don't have any to give you as of yet. I would be most
appreciative if you would send me a copy of your replies. Thanks for the
    help.
