    Synthesising Human Motion for Virtual Performance

    Where?

    Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on a three year EPSRC
    funded research project. The project will be conducted in the 3D Vision
    Group of the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) in
    collaboration with the Department of Dance Studies. The Centre is one of
    the largest and best equipped vision groups in the UK and is within a top
    5*
    rated Department of EE & IT. The Department of Dance Studies is unusual
    among arts departments in its research in multi-media dance technologies.

    What?

    Virtual environments and animated films need human inhabitants that
    exhibit natural looking complex motion. Traditional keyframe animation
    requires considerable effort and skill to obtain complex motion. An
    alternative is motion capture using marker based motion capture systems.
    This motion is incredibly lifelike but each distinct motion must be
    captured as required, as it is difficult to edit.

    The goals of the project are to develop techniques for the synthesis of
    human motion in the context of dance animation and computer games.The
    project will involve the use of motion capture data and will develop
    methods to edit, analyse and resynthesise this data.

    The research will be carried out in collaboration with Oxford Metrics, a
    leading supplier of motion capture systems worldwide.

    Preference will be given to candidates with experience in computer
    graphics, machine vision, computational geometry, human biomechanics
    and C/C++/Java. An interest in the performing arts is an advantage.



    Details

    Candidates should hold or expect to obtain a first or upper second class
    degree in a numerate discipline. The award is available only to candidates
    from the EU.
