New Genovation 3-D Foot Imaging System Breaks Performance and Price Barriers

Irvine, CA Ė High-tech innovator Genovation Inc. today announced and publicly demonstrated its Foot-Stationš imaging system for use by healthcare professionals. The Foot-Station couples a walk-on pressure-pad with Windows 95 compatible application software to yield a high-performance imaging system, at a price of only $1,995. The systemís proprietary 3-D imaging capability makes it the ideal platform for ordering custom orthotics from a number of manufacturers, via Genovation.

"Pressure plates have been used for decades to obtain excellent 2-dimensional data of the plantar surface of the foot" says Leonard Genest, Genovationís President and the companyís chief technologist. "We managed to advance this technology quite dramatically, and are now capable of imaging the foot in 3-D to the top of the arch", he adds. Moreover, "we can now provide the same information to an orthotic laboratory or insole manufacturer as would be available from digital scanning of a plaster cast or a foam box recast". This breakthrough advance coupled with the systemís ability to perform detailed gait analysis, holds out a very promising prospect for the foot-care community. "In effect, the door is now open for low cost imaging of patientsí feet, leading to rapid turn-around production of custom orthotics, particularly customizable pre-fabs" says Genest.

According to Genovationís Executive Vice President Joseph Meshi, the Foot-Station serves a dual purpose - "it is an excellent office based diagnostics and patient documentation tool, and a significant revenue enhancement vehicle" he states. Technically, the Foot-Station is capable of imaging patientís feet in both static stance and dynamic gait. The 2-D and 3-D images are then stored in the systemís high-speed database alongside other patientís data, may be printed in color, or transmitted to Genovation as a part of an order for customized insoles or orthotics.

"The Foot-Station is designed to provide the healthcare community with cost-effective means of performing a wide range of foot-related diagnostics" says Dr. Craig Lowe, Genovationís Medical Director who has participated in the development of the Foot-Station from its inception. "The system is capable of such functions as identifying the pathomechanical effects created by weight-bearing foot pronation or supination, as well as flagging potential limb-length discrepancies, clarifying areas prone to pain especially with diabetic or neuropathic patients and providing static and dynamic gait electronic imagery. Further, the Foot-Station may be used to attract and educate patients, and to document their response to therapy." The system may also be used as a tele-medicine modality, allowing the physician to request an independent analysis of the patientís feet image and other data from Genovationís medical staff or consulting doctors. Lowe previously founded three orthotic laboratories and helped pioneer the foam box technique of obtaining foot impressions. He believes that the Foot-Station will modernize patient services by eventually replacing the Cast & Box impressions with "true low-cost 3-dimensional image capture", reducing both costs and turnaround time.

Genovationís "Electronics for the Feetš " division specializes in providing high-technology solutions to foot-care segments of the healthcare community, and to the footwear industry. "The extension of our basic technologies to the healthcare industry and orthotics is natural and evolutionary" says Meshi. "And since we are not manufacturers of orthotic insoles, we had to devise appropriate strategies and methods of allowing our system users to order such products through us". Thus, under Genovationís "Nexus" approach, the companyís Foot-Station users will be able to order orthotic products from a number of sources, including their own favorite laboratory. Genovation has positioned itself to perform final customization of certain orthotic and comfort insole products manufactured by leading vendors such as Acor, ATP, Ever-Flex and others. Concurrently, the company will facilitate the ordering of orthotics by the service provider from any participating laboratory. "We believe that the Foot-Station is capable of handling nearly all the cases that could be resolved by application of a modified pre-fab orthotic -- perhaps 70-80% of all patients" says Lowe. "While problems such as severe metatarsus adductus, club foot and partial amputated foot conditions would still require negative casts, the Foot-Station imagery and use of artificial intelligence software under development by Genovation would easily manage the rest." Delivery of final-customized products from Genovation, which presently takes about 7 days, is projected to eventually take place within 72 hours of order.

The Foot-Station is comprised of two components. The hardware component is the Foot-Padš pressure plate that features an array of 1536 pressure sensors. The 21" square Foot-Pad attaches to any desktop or notebook PC computer via the parallel port while providing a pass-through connection to the printer. The application software modules include patient testing, imaging and data capture, data base management, ordering and encrypted communications. Installation of the system is simple, mostly automatic and done in few minutes.

Field testing of the Foot-Station has been in progress since early 1998. The company expects to offer the system for sale in the near future.
