CRYOPRESERVATION OF BIOLOGICAL TISSUE RESEARCH
Applications are invited for a PhD. graduate student position in the area
of Biomechanical/Biomedical Engineering at the University of Calgary.
Graduate students at the MSc level may also be considered.
The specific area of research is the investigation of Ice Structure and the
Osmotic Environment in Tissues during Freezing. The applicant must be
strongly committed to research and have solid background in any one of the
following: Continuum Mechanics, Physics of Phase Change, Heat and Mass
Transfer, Cryogenics, Thermodynamics, Multiphase Porous Media, Chemical
Engineering and Numerical Modelling techniques such as Finite Elements.
Funding of approximately $15, 000 CAN is available from a Whitaker
Foundation Research grant. This may also be supplemented by income from
extra duties such as teaching and research assistants.
The research group concept at the University of Calgary is unique in that
it involves a multidisciplinary association of researchers. Individuals
with backgrounds in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical), Basic
Science (Molecular Biology, Development of Cell Biology, Biochemistry and
Biophysics), Orthopeadic Surgery, Rheumatology, Kinesiology and Sports
Medicine all work together.
For consideration, please submit full C.V. with the names and phone numbers
of three references, as well as one-page statement of research interests
and goals.
