There have been a number of most interesting replies to my original
question on this subject.
Why do stone carvers use such heavy hammers ?
I intend to post the gist of the replies shortly, but some may still be
trickling in.
No one, so far, has tackled the question as to the way the rock
fractures.
Will there be a difference when it is struck with a light high velocity
missile (hammer head) or a large slowly moving one ?
This is a question which someone with an interest in ballistics may be
able to answer.
A military man may be able to help.
