THE NEUROS PROJECT
The NEUROS project is a European collaborative effort in the field of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for restoration of mobility in paraplegic individuals. The objective of the project is to develop methods and technology to improve the applicability of FES systems through:
* The application of closed-loop control systems
* The derivation of information from natural sensors
* Selective activation of muscles through implantable stimulation and improved stimulation electrodes.
The applicability of these methods will specifically be tested for FES-supported standing up, standing and sitting down.

THE EU TRAINING AND MOBILITY OF RESEARCHERS PROGRAM
NEUROS is a project in the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) program of the European Union. The TMR program stimulates the training and mobility of young researchers through their involvement in research in an international network of distinguished research groups. The TMR program requires that the researchers employed under the program are citizens of the European Union or associated states (Iceland, Israel, Liechtenstein and Norway. The association of Switzerland and Slovenia is under negotiation) and are not nationals of the state in which they are appointed. The postdocs in the NEUROS network will preferably work for subsequent years in different research groups in the network.

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSTDOC POSITIONS
Postdoc1:
EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF FES SUPPORTED STANDING STRATEGIES
1 year at University of Twente and at least 6 months at University College London

Within the EU funded project NEUROS a two year postdoc position is available for investigating strategies for FES supported mobility, specifically standing up and sitting down in paraplegics. In recent years, several control strategies have been proposed for these tasks. However, experimental evaluation has been limited. The objective of the proposed postdoc research is:
* to identify and select alternative control strategies for FES supported standing up, standing and sitting down.
* to experimentally test selected strategies in paraplegic subjects.
The postdoc will work at both the University of Twente and University College London, having a subsequent appointment at each institution.
The postdoc must have a Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical or Systems Engineering or Movement Sciences, and should have experience in experimental research involving human subjects, preferably in neural prostheses or motor control.

COMPUTER MODELING OF THE STIMULATION OF LUMBO-SACRAL ANTERIOR NERVE ROOTS

In a cooperative project of University College London (Dr. Nick Donaldson), University of Louvain (Prof. Claude Veraart) and University of Twente (Dr. Jan Holsheimer) concerning selective stimulation of lumbo-sacral anterior nerve roots a multichannel implantable stimulator is being developed at University College London for implantation in paraplegic patients. In the current preclinical study the stimulator will be connected to multi-contact nerve cuff electrodes placed around several lumbo-sacral anterior roots of baboons. Experiments will be done to identify the muscle selectivity obtained by selective stimulation of each root via single contacts inside the nerve cuff. The geometry and nerve fiber content of each root will be quantified. For the interpretation of the results a computer model will be used to simulate the stimulation of the roots.
The post doc will primarily work on the aspect of computer modeling at the University of Twente, which includes:
* retrieval of anatomical data from microscopical nerve sections to build 3D volume conductor models of the various anterior roots surrounded by nerve cuff electrodes;
* calculation of the 3D potential fields and the areas in the anterior root models in which nerve fibers are activated, according to their spatial diameter distribution;
* comparison of model predictions and experimental results, and conclusions regarding the muscle selectivity obtainable by this method of muscle recruitment in the lower extremities.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Biophysics and should preferably have some experience in computer modeling and electrical neuromuscular stimulation.

Postdoc3: Clinical implementation and evaluation of an implantable two-channel drop foot stimulator: 2 years at Roessingh Research and Development

The postdoc will perform a clinical study on the application of an implantable two channel drop foot stimulator, developed by Roessingh Research and Development bv and the University of Twente. The implantation and evaluation of the stimulator will be done in cooperation with several clinical partners (Rehabilitation Centre 'het Roessingh' and regional hospital in Enschede, academic hospital of the Free University in Amsterdam). Apart from performing the actual evaluation study, the postdoc will coordinate this cooperation with the clinical partners.
Depending on the interest of the postdoc the research may include additional technical development of the system, specifically the control of the drop foot stimulator using an accelerometer or gyroscope, EMG or physiological sensor signals.
The postdoc will cooperate with other teams in the NEUROS network, specifically University College London (Dr. Nick Donaldson) and University of Aalborg (Prof. Thomas Sinkjaer, Dr. Michel Ladouceur).
Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering, Movement Sciences, or equivalent and should have experience with experimental research involving human subjects..

CLINICAL IMPLEMENTATION OF FES SUPPORTED MOBILITY SYSTEMS

In the next two years, a number of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) projects for paraplegia will be undertaken at UCL and two associated hospitals with Spinal Injury Units. These projects will include:
* Development of the Lumbar Anterior Root Stimulator Implant (LARSI) for standing, stepping and cycling;
* Unsupported (without support from the hands) standing using automatic control to the calf muscles (with Professor Ken Hunt of Glasgow University); and
* Comparative testing of controllers for standing up, supported standing, and sitting down (a NEUROS project with Dr Peter Veltink of the University of Twente).
Within the EU-funded project NEUROS, a postdoc position is available for a physiotherapist or a suitable person (e.g. Movement Scientist) with physiotherapy training. The duration is uncertain because it depends on the exchange rates, but is expected to be at least nine months. The postdoc will have two roles.
The postdoc will perform an individual research project within the fields described above. The exact topic is open for discussion and should suit the applicant. It may relate to the current FES research at UCL, or one of the associated hospitals (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital or Salisbury District Hospital), or to another NEUROS centre. In addition, during experiments in the hospitals, he or she will be the clinician responsible for the subjects, and will assist the research engineers to carry out their experiments.
Applicants must have a PhD degree and should have some experience of working with patients with spinal cord injury. Experience of FES is desirable but not essential. In order to work in the British hospitals, it is essential that applicants be registered with the CPSM (the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine: the British qualifying body), or make a successful application for registration.
