  • Summary "How to glue something on fresh bone?"

    Thank you for your answers.

    My question was:

For a study, we want to glue kevlar thread on fresh jaws to simulate
    tendons.
After we fix charge on these threads. The contact bone-glue-kevlar
have to resist to more than 1 kN.
Have you a idea of how to obtain a good result? Have you an
experience in it? what kind of glue to use? kevlar thread is it a
    good idea?

    Your answers are:

This is a very good question. We have had some experience in this
    field and
have found that it is almost impossible to create a bond between
    anything
    and fresh bone.
The only way that we have managed to obtain good fixation is to fix the
material (in your case kevlar) to the bone with screws mounted in bone
cement (PMMA). The best result is achieved if the screw actually
    protrudes
    into the bone.

Bonne
    chance

We have just completed experiments in which we glued strain gages onto
fresh bones. This worked extremely well with the M-Bond 200 adhesive
sold by Measurements Group Inc.The bone surface does require minimal
preparation (dried, degreased) but its characteristics are
    definitely still
fresh. I have no experience with kevlar thread but could imagine this
glue being appropriate. Maybe you could get in touch with MG.

Why not use a mechanical fastener to attatch the artificial tendon
    to the
bone as is done in modern medicine with good results. I don't have any
reference but I bet it would be easy to find one.

You may have success with a cyanoacrylate if your kevlar thread is
wrapped around the bone first. Clearly, the more soft tissue that is
removed, the better you result will be.

I was in the need of getting a air tight bond between casting
    material and
fresh bone tissue which also has to withstand hydrostatic pressure
    up to 30
psi. What worked best for me is following procedure:
    1) clean the bone surface with acetone to degrease it
    2) apply about three thin layers of cyanoacrylate adhesive (i.e., Super
Glue) and let it dry in between
    3) then, you can attach almost anything to the bone respectively the
    super glue
Using this procedure I got a very good bond between the casting
    material and
the bone. Good luck with your experiment. Let me know, if it worked
    out for you.
