University of Twente
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering - Biomedical Engineering Group
Position for one four year Ph.D. student position
Vacancy number 98/062
MODELING OF MUSCLE FUNCTION
You co-operate in the research on the functionality of the human locomotor
apparatus, in which the characterisation of skeletal muscle and the
influence of muscle properties and morphology on its function are central.
You further develop and apply muscle models (in co-operation with
experimental myologists), amongst others to the effects of partial
activation of muscle complexes and to adaptation mechanisms. The existing
models vary from relative simple geometrical models to 2-D and 3-D finite
element models. A part of the research is conducted in co-operation with
the Myological Laboratory of the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences, Free
University, Amsterdam and with the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA.
You have an academic training at an M.Sc. level in a relevant discipline,
e.g. Mechanical Engineering or Applied Physics. Knowledge in the area of
solid mechanics is required. You have affinity with the biomedical
application and are prepared to perform, together with authorised persons,
small-scale experimental work on animals. You will have a fulltime
employment for a period of maximally four years and will finalise your
research with a Ph.D. thesis.
