    Dear Netters,

The organisers of the VIII International Symposium on Biomechanics and
Medicine in Swimming would like to thank all of you who participated (200+)
in this major event of Swimming Science. 25 successful scientific sessions
were performed during June 28 - July 1, 1998 at the University of Jyvaskyla
in Jyvaskyla, Finland. Nearly 130 scientific presentations were given within
6 plenaries, 8 podium sessions, 9 poster sessions, 1 pool side demonstration
    session and 1 panel discussion.

There is a very limited availability of the Book of Abstracts (ISBN
951-39-0266-8) edited by KL Keskinen, PV Komi, PL Pitkanen. The Book of
Abstracts includes all the papers presented in the Symposium, the full
Programme and the Index. There are 162 pages in the book, all written in
English. If you want to have your own copy, please, send your mailing

contact you via email, fax or phone when needed. The price for one copy is
    FIM 100 + postage. According to July 1998 exchance rates 1 E eq 6 FIM and 1
    USD eq 5.5 FIM.

Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming VIII (eds Keskinen KL, Komi PV,
Hollander AP) will be the Proceedings of the VIII International Symposium on
Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming. Approximately 100 peer reviewed
six-page articles based on the presentations given during the Symposium will
be published in this Book. This volume is of major importance for the
Swimming Science while it is the permanent record of the Series of
Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming which started already in 1970. The 8.
volume (appr. 550-650 pages) will be published by the organisers of the 1998
Swimming Symposium by the end of this year. The Book will be available
during the first quarter of the year 1999 with a price to be determined
later. Please send your mailing address to: keskinen@pallo.jyu.fi with full
details in order for us to contact you via email, fax or phone when needed.
    The Symposium participants
who have paid their full registration fee will receive a free copy without a
    need for a separate order.

During the Closing Ceremony of the 1998 Swimming Symposium the host of the
2002 Swimming Symposium was announced. Prof. Dr. Jean-Claude Chatard
(chatard@univ-st-etienne.fr) will take the responsibility to organise the
9th International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming at the
University of Saint Etienne in St Etienne of France.

On behalf of the successful 1998 Swimming Symposium I wish you all nice and
