    Postgraduate Research Scholarship 1998 - 2001

The University of New South Wales

School of Safety Science, Faculty of Science and Technology

The School of Safety Science is offering a postgraduate research
scholarship for a suitably qualified candidate to undertake a PhD degree in
the area of the biomechanics of normal and pathological paediatric gait.
The research project will involve the application of experimental and
    numerical methods.

The School of Safety Science and Sydney Children’s Hospital are jointly
running a clinical gait analysis service for children. This collaboration
extends to research in medicine, surgery, physiotherapy and other fields
related to the treatment and rehabilitation of children with movement
dysfunction, eg. cerebral palsy and spina bifida. The research student
will be working within this multi-disciplinary environment and interacting
with the clinical team. It is intended that a number of research questions
are addressed in the project, however the exact project structure will be
determined by the candidate and supervisors.

Applicants should have a 4 year Bachelor Degree, at least Class 2 Division
1, in Engineering, science, or another field of study relevant to
biomechanics. Applicants with equivalent qualifications will be
considered. Preference will be given to applicants with familiarity with
numerical modelling methods in biomechanics and experience in gait
analysis. The applicant should be an Australian citizen or permanent
    resident.

The scholarship amounts to $17,000 tax-free per annum and a yearly
allowance for related expenses. It is preferred that the student will be
able to take up the scholarship in session 2, 1998, but it can be deferred
    until session 1 1999.

Further Information is available from Dr. Andrew McIntosh on (02) 9385
    5348/4144, fax: (02) 9385 6190, or by email .
Applicants should send their Curriculum Vitae to School Office, School of
    Safety Science, UNSW, Sydney, 2052.
    Applications Close August 3, 1998.
