    Job Opening

Research Associate / Post Doctoral Opportunity
An exceptional, full time research opportunity is available immediately
in the field of biomechanics on the topic of overuse injury among manual
wheelchair users through a VA merit review research grant. The
incumbent of this position will be employed by the VA. The principal
investigator, Mary Rodgers, PhD, is conducting this work at the
University of Maryland in the Department of Physical Therapy of the
School of Medicine. Work to date has focused on recognition of risk
factors for overuse injuries among manual wheelchair users, injury
prevention and physiologic responses to wheelchair propulsion.

    Facility
The 1350 ft2 wheelchair propulsion research laboratory is equipped with
a 3D motion analysis system (Peak Performance), a Medgraphics metabolic
cart, a prototype wheelchair ergometer instrumented to obtain handrim
forces and moments in 3 dimensions from both wheels, 8 channel
telemetered surface EMG (Noraxon), and multiple computer workstations.
A biomechanical model that employs inverse dynamics is used to calculate
    joint kinetics.
Some of the equipment housed in adjoining laboratories includes
isokinetic dynamometers, gait mats, floor level force plates, balance
testing equipment, pressure insoles for standing and gait assessment,
and a variety of exercise testing equipment.

    Responsibilities
The incumbent will perform biomechanical and physiologic data
collection, analysis, and interpretation related to wheelchair
propulsion research. Dissemination of research findings through
publication and presentation at scientific meetings is expected in
conjunction with the PI. Other duties include supervising scientific
and technical personnel, students, and clerical staff; recruiting and
training personnel for data collection and analysis; recruitment of
research participants; and literature review. In conjunction with the
PI, development of original research in the area of wheelchair
    propulsion is desired.

    Qualifications
A Doctoral degree in a field related to this area of research, such as
biomechanics, physical therapy, kinesiology, biomedical engineering, or
exercise physiology is desired. Prior research experience is required.
An understanding of the needs of wheelchair users and a desire to work
in this area is essential. Applicant must be a United States citizen.
