OPEN POSITION:
The Motion Analysis Laboratory (MAL), at the Shriners Hospitals for
Children, Erie PA, USA, is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a
full-time, Biomechanist/Therapist. Our parallel programs in clinical and
research Biomechanics will offer an ideal blend of professional activities
for individuals with interest in pediatric care.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will become an essential member of the core MAL
staff. Of key importance will be collaboration with the Laboratory
Director and Engineer on clinical gait analyses (e.g., musculoskeletal and
dynamic EMG evaluations, instrumented motion analyses, and patient care
conferences with medical staff). Equally important are plans for basic and
clinical research; here, the Biomechanist/Therapist will ensure anatomical
and functional validity for new protocols involving biomechanical modeling
(upper and lower extremity, full body, etc.). The Biomechanist/Therapist
will also act as clinical liaison for the MAL within the community, and in
professional societies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in Biomechanics,
Kinesiology, or related field, and experience in performing musculoskeletal
examinations (primarily tests for muscle strength and joint
range-of-motion). The latter may be accomplished through prior training as
a Kinesiologist, a Biomechanist, or a licensed Physical Therapist.
Experience with instrumented gait analysis is needed, and an interest in
general Biomechanics of human movement will facilitate new protocol
development. Though not required, desirable qualifications include
certification in fine-wire EMG analyses, and familiarity with Vicon motion
capture systems, calculus, and vector algebra.
FACILITIES:
The existing MAL was built in the Fall of 1997, and will be moved to a new
wing of this orthopedic hospital early in 1999. Equipment includes a six
camera Vicon 370 system, two moveable AMTI forceplates, surface and
fine-wire EMG, observational video, and networked computers. Collaboration
with the Pennsylvania State University (Center for Locomotion Studies),
Hamot Medical Center (Research Center), and Gannon University (Physical
Therapy Program) provide many opportunities for professional growth through
research.
