The Musee D'Orsay in Paris has a wonderful book shop where during the
summer of 1996 on the table with books about photography I came
across some gems. The first a book in French on the work of
Jules-Etienne Marey not much text but many photographs. The
second a series of booklets with the photos of Edward Muybridge, with
a short explaination in English. These booklets "animate" by
flipping the pages from back to front making the man "walk",
the horse "run" or the bird "fly". These books might not be for sale there
anymore, but since the question was originated in France, maybe
this information can be a good starting point.
