ÉTIENNE-JULES MAREY
Physiologiste spécialisé dans l'étude du mouvement, il invente le fusil
photographique, qui permet de réaliser une douzaine de photographies à
intervalles très courts sur un même disque. Voulant se lancer dans une
analyse plus détaillée, il abandonne son fusil, qui le limite par la
taille du disque, et met au point un nouvel appareil: Le
chronophotographe à plaques fixes (plaques de verre photographiques).
Grâce à un obturateur approprié, il fait "clignoter" I'objectif à des
intervalles de temps égaux et obtient des images successives de corps en
mouvement sur fond noir. On voit donc plusieurs instantanés d'un sujet
se déplaçant rapidement. Il se rend vite compte que la plaque fixe ne
convient pas aux mouvements très lents car alors les images sont
imparfaitement séparées ou même superposées, I'objectif étant fixe.
Dans sa communication à l'Académie des Sciences du 15 octobre 1888 il
déclare, que pour résoudre ce problème, la solution consiste à "déplacer
la surface sensible". Or, la plaque de verre est à la fois trop lourde
et trop fragile pour être déplacée vingt fois par seconde.
Le 29 octobre 1888, Marey présente à l'Académie sa solution: il présente
"une bande de papier sensible sur laquelle une série d'images a été
obtenue, à raison de vingt image par seconde. "L'appareil que j'ai
construit à cet effet déroule une bande de papier sensible avec une
vitesse qui peut atteindre 1 m60 par seconde."
A cette même communication, il établi aussi que la bande de papier doit
se dérouler par saccades (sinon, I'image sera floue) et il présente un
dispositif qu'il a inventé et qui arrête le papier pendant la durée de
l'exposition à la lumière, soit 1/5000 de seconde. Les images sont alors
d'une parfaite netteté.
3 novembre 1890, date importante, mais rarement remarquée dans les
écrits sur Marey: Dans sa communication à l'Académie des Sciences, Marey
pose le principe de la nécessité d'une juxtaposition rigoureuse des
images sur la pellicule, condition indispensable pour que les images
enregistrées puissent être projetées.
Citons le: "Tous les mouvements sont réglés de facon que la pellicule
sensible progresse, dans l'intervalle de deux images, d'une longueur
précisément égale à celle de l'image elle même".
On dit en effet souvent de Marey qu'il ne s'intéressait qu'à l'analyse
du mouvement (au quel cas une marge de grandeur quelconque entre les
images ne pose aucun inconvénient), mais on oublie de dire que c'est
bien lui aussi qui a établi les bases pour la synthèse du mouvement.
C'est lors de cette même communication que Marey annonce qu'il remplace
le papier sensible par la pellicule en celluloïd, fourni en bandes de
1m35 par Balagny (le premier fabricant en Europe). Balagny écrit à Marey
le 12 décembre 1890: "Nous ne faisons cette grandeur absolument que pour
vous". Le 2 mai 1892, Marey présente à l'Académie des Sciences un
projecteur qu'il appelle "Projecteur chronophotographique" et qui permet
"de montrer à un vaste auditoire les mouvements d'objets de toute nature
dont on a recueilli les images successives par le chronophotographe
enregistreur."
Carpentier, le mécanicien des Frères Lumière, vient avec ceux-ci rendre
visite à Marey, et c'est le chronophotographe qui les inspire pour la
prise du brevet de leur cinématographe.
Marey prévoyait déjà des appareils distincts pour la prise de vue et la
projection. Cependant, dans l'appareil de Marey, on peut facilement
faire passer un faisceau lumineux par la fenêtre ménagée à l'arrière, ce
qu'il faisait couramment à partir de 1888.
Aucune pièce mécanique ne s'interpose, et le rayon lumineux peut
traverser la pellicule et l'objectif qui l'étale sur l'écran. Ce
dispositif de réversibilité est celui adopté par les Lumière pour le
Cinématographe.

Have you tried contacting Dr Chris Kirtley in Hong
Kong. If not, he is a medic bioengineer who works with physiotherapists and
podiatrists. Chris developed softwear to analyse movement and uses it on
the net . Much of his preliminary work
was done teaching podiatrists about gait analysis.

ÉTIENNE-JULES MAREY
Physiologiste spécialisé dans l'étude du mouvement, il invente le fusil
photographique, qui permet de réaliser une douzaine de photographies à
intervalles très courts sur un même disque. Voulant se lancer dans une
analyse plus détaillée, il abandonne son fusil, qui le limite par la
taille du disque, et met au point un nouvel appareil: Le
chronophotographe à plaques fixes (plaques de verre photographiques).
Grâce à un obturateur approprié, il fait "clignoter" I'objectif à des
intervalles de temps égaux et obtient des images successives de corps en
mouvement sur fond noir. On voit donc plusieurs instantanés d'un sujet
se déplaçant rapidement. Il se rend vite compte que la plaque fixe ne
convient pas aux mouvements très lents car alors les images sont
imparfaitement séparées ou même superposées, I'objectif étant fixe.
Dans sa communication à l'Académie des Sciences du 15 octobre 1888 il
déclare, que pour résoudre ce problème, la solution consiste à "déplacer
la surface sensible". Or, la plaque de verre est à la fois trop lourde
et trop fragile pour être déplacée vingt fois par seconde.
Le 29 octobre 1888, Marey présente à l'Académie sa solution: il présente
"une bande de papier sensible sur laquelle une série d'images a été
obtenue, à raison de vingt image par seconde. "L'appareil que j'ai
construit à cet effet déroule une bande de papier sensible avec une
vitesse qui peut atteindre 1 m60 par seconde."
A cette même communication, il établi aussi que la bande de papier doit
se dérouler par saccades (sinon, I'image sera floue) et il présente un
dispositif qu'il a inventé et qui arrête le papier pendant la durée de
l'exposition à la lumière, soit 1/5000 de seconde. Les images sont alors
d'une parfaite netteté.
3 novembre 1890, date importante, mais rarement remarquée dans les
écrits sur Marey: Dans sa communication à l'Académie des Sciences, Marey
pose le principe de la nécessité d'une juxtaposition rigoureuse des
images sur la pellicule, condition indispensable pour que les images
enregistrées puissent être projetées.
Citons le: "Tous les mouvements sont réglés de facon que la pellicule
sensible progresse, dans l'intervalle de deux images, d'une longueur
précisément égale à celle de l'image elle même".
On dit en effet souvent de Marey qu'il ne s'intéressait qu'à l'analyse
du mouvement (au quel cas une marge de grandeur quelconque entre les
images ne pose aucun inconvénient), mais on oublie de dire que c'est
bien lui aussi qui a établi les bases pour la synthèse du mouvement.
C'est lors de cette même communication que Marey annonce qu'il remplace
le papier sensible par la pellicule en celluloïd, fourni en bandes de
1m35 par Balagny (le premier fabricant en Europe). Balagny écrit à Marey
le 12 décembre 1890: "Nous ne faisons cette grandeur absolument que pour
vous". Le 2 mai 1892, Marey présente à l'Académie des Sciences un
projecteur qu'il appelle "Projecteur chronophotographique" et qui permet
"de montrer à un vaste auditoire les mouvements d'objets de toute nature
dont on a recueilli les images successives par le chronophotographe
enregistreur."
Carpentier, le mécanicien des Frères Lumière, vient avec ceux-ci rendre
visite à Marey, et c'est le chronophotographe qui les inspire pour la
prise du brevet de leur cinématographe.
Marey prévoyait déjà des appareils distincts pour la prise de vue et la
projection. Cependant, dans l'appareil de Marey, on peut facilement
faire passer un faisceau lumineux par la fenêtre ménagée à l'arrière, ce
qu'il faisait couramment à partir de 1888.
Aucune pièce mécanique ne s'interpose, et le rayon lumineux peut
traverser la pellicule et l'objectif qui l'étale sur l'écran. Ce
dispositif de réversibilité est celui adopté par les Lumière pour le
Cinématographe.

Have you tried contacting Dr Chris Kirtley in Hong
Kong. If not, he is a medic bioengineer who works with physiotherapists and
podiatrists. Chris developed softwear to analyse movement and uses it on
the net . Much of his preliminary work
was done teaching podiatrists about gait analysis.
