*** PLEASE KEEP THIS NOTE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE ***
Dear Biomch-L readers,
Considering today's posting from Michigan on changing a subscription address,
I'd like to remark that such requests should *not* be posted to all currently
> 535 subscribers. Instead, a user should sign off *from the old address*
with the command
SIGNOFF BIOMCH-L
to LISTSERV@HEARN.BITNET or to LISTSERV@NIC.SURFNET.NL, and resubscribe
*from the new address* by sending the command
SUBSCRIBE BIOMCH-L first_name last_name (institution)
to the same ListServer address, where the "first_name ..." string should not
exceed 40 characters, and contain at least one space. If you merely wish to
change this text string while maintaining the actual email address, the SIGNOFF
command is superfluous.
[ If the SIGNOFF command is rejected, you are not a subscriber at the address
from which you sent the SIGNOFF request, as seen by the ListServer s/w; this
may be due to a local name change since you signed on, the use of a different
site in a cluster of machines, or a number of other reasons such as a change
of an explicit routing path in a compound address user%gateway@node.domain,
the use of different emailer software packages such as a BITNET mailer or an
Internet mailer, and/or the use of the HEARN.BITNET address instead of the
NIC.SURFNET.NL address -- all depending on your original sign-on modality.
As posted recently, your Internet alias may not be known in BITNET -- check
so by sending the request SHOW ALIAS node_name to LISTSERV@HEARN.BITNET or
to LISTSERV@NIC.SURFNET.NL; you are welcome to ask your local ADMIN staff
(send a SHOW ADMIN your_BITNET_node_name to the ListServer address) to ensure
proper registration. ]
If you can no longer email from the old address, please send a note to any of
the list owners; their addresses can be obtained by sending either of the
following requests to the LISTSERVer address (but *not* to the list's address
BIOMCH-L@...):
SHOW OWN BIOMCH-L (N.B.: or OWNER, but *not* OWNERS)
REVIEW BIOMCH-L (SHORT (N.B.: or REV)
* I urge all subscribers who have not already done so to retrieve the user
* instruction file for ListServer use by sending the commands INFO ? and
* INFO GENINTRO to either of the above ListServer addresses (*not* to the
* BIOMCH-L address, though!). Also the command SHOW ? is useful. Note
* that LISTEARN s/w as implemented at HEARN.BITNET / NIC.SURFNET.NL differs
* slightly from LISTSERV s/w outside EARN, the European Academic Research
* Network component of BITNET, e.g., as regards the SHOW command.
Thanks for your help, and with my apologies for trying to make our life
easier -- hjw.
