    THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

    U2000 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

    1999

    GUIDELINES

    PURPOSE

    To support excellence in full-time research; undertaken, preferably, in
    collaboration with a research team in any school or department of the
    University. Up to fifteen
    U2000 Postdoctoral Research Fellowships will be awarded in 1999 for
    full-time research in any discipline offered by the University.

    ELIGIBILITY

    To be eligible to apply, candidates must

    have held a doctoral degree for no more than five years at 1 December
    1998 (ie: awarded between 30 November 1993 and 1 December 1998). In cases of
    interrupted careers, the selection committee will determine the
    equivalence of the applicant's postdoctoral status;
    not be a member of the tenured academic or teaching staff employed by
    The University of Sydney at the date of application;
    submit proof of doctoral status or proof that all the requirements for
    the award of a doctorate have been met.

    Preference may be given to candidates not currently employed by The
    University of Sydney and to those who do not have a current offer of
    employment with The
    University of Sydney.

    TENURE

    The period of appointment will be for a minimum of three years, with a
    possible one year extension, depending upon availability of funding.

    The appointments will be available from January 1999, and should be
    commenced within six months of an offer being made.

    VALUE OF THE AWARD

    Salary in 1999 will be within the range $A42,869 to $A46,017 per annum.

    A minimum cost airfare direct to Sydney, and return to point of departure
    on expiry of the Fellowship, will be provided. Fares for dependants, and
    removal
    expenses, will not be provided. An initial setting-up grant for research
    purposes of $A25,000 will be provided upon commencement of appointment.

    REPORT ON FELLOWSHIP

    Fellows are required to provide an annual report of their research work,
    and details of their future intended program for the following year. This
    should be forwarded
    to the Research and Scholarships Office. A full report covering all aspects
    of the work undertaken and details of any new knowledge gained in the field
    of study must
    also be forwarded to the Research and Scholarships Office at the completion
    of the Fellowship.

    APPLICATIONS

    1. Applicants must complete an application form which can be obtained from
    the Research and Scholarships Office or at:
    http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/reschols.
    In addition, the following information must be provided:

    an up-to-date curriculum vitae;
    a list of publications (distinguishing clearly between full
    publications and abstracts of papers presented to learned societies);
    an outline of the proposed research project in no more than two pages;
    the names and addresses of two referees who will be forwarding
    testimonials.

    If successful, overseas applicants will also be asked to provide details
    (names, ages of children) of any family members who will accompany the
    applicant to
    Australia. This information is necessary for the University to assist with
    visa arrangements.

    2. Before submitting applications, applicants must have made contact with
    the relevant Head of School or Department in the University (refer to list of
    Schools and Departments overleaf) and have formulated their research
    proposals in the light of advice received from the Head of
    School/Department or her/his
    nominee. Applicants must attach, or arrange for statements from the Head of
    School/Department supporting them and their research programs. This
    statement will include agreement by the Head of School/Department to meet
    20% of the salary costs for the Fellowship. Applicants are requested to
    ensure that their referees forward their testimonials direct to Lalaja
    Varghese, in the Research and Scholarships Office, by the closing date for
    applications. The
    University will not contact referees to request these testimonials.
    (Applicants with overseas referees should remind referees to use fax,
    airmail or E-mail.).

    CLOSING DATE

    THE ORIGINAL PLUS 8 COPIES OF THE APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED BY TUESDAY
