    FRIENDLY REMINDER

    Dear Friends:

The time has come to remind you about the upcoming Conference "Progress in
    Motor Control - II".

We hope that those of you who attended the first meeting in 1996, will come
again to share new experiences and celebrate in the spirit of Movement
Science. We also hope that those who inadvertently missed the first
meeting, will come to the second one to exchange ideas and results in the
very friendly atmosphere of Penn State.

Note that the deadline for abstract submission (February 1, 1999) is
approaching. Please, do not wait until the last day!!!

We hope to see you in August 1999 in State College!

Progress in Motor Control - II:
    Structure-Function Relations in Voluntary Movements

    August 19-22, 1999
    The Pennsylvania State University
    State College, Pennsylvania

An outreach program of the College of Health and Human Development.

A 3-day International Conference "Progress in Motor Control-II" with a
sub-title: "Structure-Function Relations in Voluntary Movements" is planned
as the second meeting of the "Progress in Motor Control" series at the
Pennsylvania State University. The first meeting, "Bernstein's Traditions
in Motor Control" took place in August 1996. It was attended by 230
researchers representing 15 countries. At the conclusion of the meeting,
many attendees suggested that the Conference should become a regular, bi-
or tri-annual event. The subtitle of the second meeting,
"Structure-Function Relations in Voluntary Movements", reflects an effort
to close the gap between modeling and neurophysiology-biomechanics in
    movement science.

The Conference will include a series of invited presentations (mornings, 40
min each) and free podium presentations (afternoons, 15 min each). Free
presentations will be solicited and organized into sessions by the
Organizing Committee. They will be selected from those submitted in
response to the Call for Papers. Our experience with the first meeting in
1996 showed that the number of submissions exceeded the possible number of
oral presentations; therefore, a poster session is also planned to
    accommodate all the accepted presentations.

If you wish to organize a mini-Symposium during the Conference, please
contact potential speakers of your event and the Organizing Committee.

    The Organizing Committee:
    K. Deutsch, M. Latash (Chairperson), K. Newell, D. Rosenbaum, D. Sternad,
    and V. Zatsiorsky.

    Among Invited Speakers Are:
    S. Bouisset, R. Enoka, I. Gelfand, A. Georgopoulos, J. Houk, M. Ioffe, M.
    Levin, R. Llinas, T.R. Nichols, G. Orlovsky, J. Rothwell, and M. Woollacott

    Site and Accomodations:
The meeting will take place in the Nittany Lion Inn, on campus of the Penn
State University. More details on registration, accommodation, etc. will be
e-mailed (or otherwise delivered) to all those who express interest and/or
submit an abstract for the Conference.

    Registration Fee:
We hope to keep the registration fee down, as we were able to do during the
first meeting. Preliminary assessments are: $160 for faculty and $80 for
students (including reception, coffee breaks, and Saturday night dinner).

    Instructions for Abstract Submission:
Please, type an abstract on a single page, single-spaced, using a 10 or 12
point font (Times recommended). Start with the title in CAPITAL LETTERS,
followed by the names of the authors and (University/Company, Town, Country
in parentheses). You can either mail a printed copy with a disk (IBM- or
Mac-formatted, with two files, in the original editor and in ASCII or
text-only) or e-mail the abstract as part of a regular electronic letter
(preferred). In the latter case, please do not use any encoding!!! The
deadline for Abstract submission is February 1, 1999.

Abstracts of accepted presentations will be published in Conference
Proceedings available during the Conference. Invited speakers will also
write Chapters which will be published in vol. 2 of a series of books
"Progress in Motor Control" by Human Kinetics Publ. Volume 1 of the series,
"Bernstein's Traditions in Movement Studies", containing Chapters written
by the invited speakers of the first meeting, has recently been published
    by Human Kinetics.
