BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING
Faculty Positions
The University of Western Ontario, through its Faculties of
Engineering Science, Medicine & Dentistry and Health Sciences
and in partnership with hospitals and medical research
institutes
in London, Ontario, is in the process of establishing a
Biomedical
Engineering Program and developing graduate and
undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering. The
University
has succeeded in securing funds from the Canada Foundation for
Innovation to provide the infrastructure needed for
research in
Biomedical Engineering.
Applications are invited for three new tenure track faculty
positions, one each in the areas of Image-Guided Therapy and
Surgery, Biomaterials and Human Biomechanics. All positions
are
subject to budget approval. It is expected that all
appointments
will be made at the Assistant Professor level but appointments
will be considered at the Associate Professor rank if
qualifications warrant such a rank. The successful
candidates will
hold an appropriate Ph.D. degree and will be required to
teach in
assigned areas, and to supervise graduate students and conduct
research. Candidates who are registered or are eligible to
register
as professional engineers in Ontario are appropriate
applicants
and are encouraged to apply. Those with other suitable
backgrounds and qualifications are also encouraged to apply.
The position in Image Guided Therapy and Surgery will deal
with
minimally invasive therapeutic and surgical instrumentation
and
techniques. Related research is currently carried out in 3D
ultrasound systems for diagnosis and image-guided prostate and
liver therapy, image-guided breast biopsy and image processing
and visualization software for image-guided neurosurgery. The
investigators have access to world-class imaging
instrumentation
(MRI, 3D ultrasound, 3D CT and digital x-ray imaging). The
successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in the
Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Medical
Biophysics. The successful candidate will collaborate with
researchers from the Robarts Research Institute and the London
Health Sciences Centre.
The appointment in Biomaterials will be made jointly in the
Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and the
School of Dentistry. The successful candidate will conduct
research in dental and other implant biomaterials. The
candidate
will have access to research facilities of materials
engineering and
in the School of Dentistry.
The successful candidate in Human Biomechanics will hold a
joint appointment in the Department of Mechanical and
Materials
Engineering and Faculty of Health Sciences. The successful
candidate is expected to establish an independently externally
funded research program in biomechanical analysis of human
motion; this may include an emphasis in any of sport analysis,
clinical and rehabilitation applications, ergonomics,
techniques
such as modeling and simulations and EMG etc.
