RESEARCH STUDENT WANTED.
The Biomechanics Section at Imperial College, London, has an immediate
vacancy for a research student. The project will study bone changes around
the femoral stems of hip prostheses, with both a prospective clinical study
and finite element stress analysis, using existing software that predicts
functional adaptation of the bone structure. The aim of the project is to
gain better understanding of which design features help to preserve the bone
structure in the long term. This project is in collaboration with the
Charing Cross, Chelsea & Westminster, and Hammersmith Hospitals, which are
parts of the Imperial College School of Medicine.
This is a wide-ranging project, that will involve working with surgeons and
their patients, with advanced medical imaging, and with finite element
stress analysis, and is therefore very suitable as an introduction to
research in the field of biomechanics. It would be ideal if applicants have
a high class first degree in mechanical engineering or similar, with
experience of finite element stress analysis and programing in C.
This project is funded by the Arthritis Research Campaign for three years,
with a starting bursary of £12811 (Tax free) rising to £14019 per annum. It
is expected that the student will register for a higher degree, leading to
PhD, and the project funds also include London University MPhil / PhD degree
registration fees for a UK or EC student.
The Biomechanics Section is part of the Mechanical Engineering Department of
Imperial College, which is situated in central West London, on the same
block as the National Science and Natural History museums. The College has
an accommodation bureau for single people and families. There will be
opportunities to undertake part time tutorial work, for which there is
payment, if desired.
