  • symposium tissue adaptation in motion

    Dear Biomch-l member,
You are kindly invited to attend:

the fourth Symposium of the Institute of Fundamental and Clinical Movement
    Sciences

    TISSUE ADAPTATION IN MOTION

    at Saturday 29th January 2000
the Aula Major of the University of Nijmegen,
    Nijmegen, The Netherlands

    Contents:
The human body has a phenomenal capacity to adapt to changing circumstances
due to injury. Broken legs heal, muscles adapt to their new functions, and
the human brain is capable of relearning motor control after injuries.
Although we all know that these adaptations are possible, we also know that
in some cases these adaptations fail, and for example endoprostheses may
loosen, and joint stability may deteriorate. Knowledge about these
adaptation capabilities and why they do not always work is important to
determine treatment protocols in clinical practice.

This symposium focuses on the mechanisms behind these adaptation processes,
and the question what is possible, and why (and under what circumstances)
the adaptation is sometimes not successful. Top scientists will discuss the
capability to adapt to trauma related to different areas of the human motor
control system, ranging from bone to motor cortex, from the fields of
    neuroscience to muscle physiology.

While in the scientific world 'tissue' forms often the criterion to
categorize, this symposium will provide an overview of the ways different
parts of the human movement apparatus adapt as viewed from different
fundamental and clinical disciplines, ranging from orthopedics and
revalidation to biology, physiology and biomechanics.
