Greetings,
Using video I am attempting to analyze the locomotive dynamics of North
American elk(Cervus elaphus) being pursued by wolves(Canis lupus) in
Yellowstone National Park, USA. It appears that the type of gait elk use to
flee from wolves varies with proximity to pursuing wolves. While not
certain, gait type in elk may reflect physical condition as has been
demonstrated in human beings. As a result wolves pursuing a group of elk
may target an individual within that group based on the individual's gait
type.
To begin to quantify this pattern I am trying to devise a method to measure
relative distance between animals on a 2 dimensional video frame that
overcomes the inherent limitations of my videos including variation in
focal length, slope, and angle. Has anyone encounter a similar problem, and
if so how was it resolved?
