The information below is in response to a question raised on the
Athletic Training Discussion Group but I believe the medical specialty
search tools that are mentioned in this posting may be of interest to
a much wider group of people than athletic trainers so I am reposting this
message to this discussion group.
I have noticed several recent messages on the athletic training
list asking for member input regarding specific medical specialists that
the members might recommend for one medical problem or another. This is
a wonderful feature of a discussion group like the athletic training list
where one can tap the expertise of others for expert referals. This kind
of referal for experts in a specific area is a constant service in the
LegalMed and LNC Nurse discussion groups that focus on forensic medicine
and medical litigation and is one of the basic reasons for membership in
those lists.
One asking such a question may want a more numerous list of
possibilities to chose from as well as getting one or more highly
recommended names from discussion group members in their field, in this
case athletic trainers, for geographic proximity reasons if no other and
to have more choices than the collective knowledge that their discussion
group may provide. There is a website that may be helpful in this regard.
It is a web page of the American Board of Medical Specialties Public
Education Program and on this specific web page of this organization is a
service named CertifiedDoctor. This service is a search engine of medical
specialists that enables a search by medical specialties and by state so
that one can attempt to supplement the information gained from peers by
the directory on this website. The URL for this directory of the ABMS is
http://www.certifieddoctor.com/search.asp
There is also a link on this page to a "complete list" of medical
specialties that this group recognizes (I doubt that accupuncture or
chiropractic would be on that list) at this URL:
http://www.certifieddoctor.com/discipline.htm
The American Medical Association also supports a directory of
physicians that enables a search by medical specialty that is located on a
web page bearing the name "Search by Physician Specialty" and is found
from the Physician Select URL:
http://www.ama-assn.org/iwcf/iwcfmgr206/aps?2006926229
>From this link one must accept the disclaimer and click on the medical
specialties link to get to the AMA medical specialties search engine.
One can also search from an expanded list of medical specialties from that
page and also link to defintions of medical specialtie from this page or
see "Physician Licensure, Certification, and Education" for information
about physician designated practice specialty.
Search engines are another resource that one could turn to for
medical specialist directory help. Lycos, for example, has a page
with the designation "Lycos Home > Reference > Searchable Databases >
Health > Find A Doctor" that may be found at this URL:
http://dir.lycos.com/Reference/Searchable_Databases/Health/Find_A_Doctor/
Another search method that may be employed is to use the
Encyclopedia of Associations found in major academic and public libraries
and use it to determine the names of medical associations that support the
specific medical specialty that supports that specialty, go to the search
engine Google at this URL:
http://google.netscape.com/
on the name(s) of these medical specialty organizations enclosed in
quotation marks, find that organizations website and determine if that
organization supports a search of the medical practitioners in that field.
I hope the information in this message will prove useful to the membership
of this discussion group.
Sincerely,
David Dillard
