Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society Young Investigator Award – EXTENSION!

As the student representative, I am very pleased to announce that the Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society (GCMAS) is making several very exciting changes in support of student members. Starting in 2012, student membership will be $10/year. With membership, students will have access to member information on the website, mentoring opportunities, and options for subscribing to the journal Gait & Posture either electronically, in print, or both. I encourage all students in the field of movement analysis to join. GCMAS is a multi-disciplinary organization of physicians, allied health professionals, engineers, biomechanists and scientists working together to advance scientific knowledge, technical capabilities, and clinical practice in the field of human movement. This is not strictly a gait society. We are a society focused on improving treatment outcomes and quality of life for persons with movement disorders; this includes, for example, upper extremity pathologies, sports injuries, and rehabilitation. The upcoming conference for the GCMAS will be held May 9-12 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, hosted by the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. Abstract submissions have been extended until 10/21/11 at midnight PST. Student members that submit abstracts to the upcoming conference will be automatically considered for the GCMAS Young Investigator Award. Students of all levels, including postdoctoral fellows, are eligible. This award includes a $1000 prize that may be used toward expenses for the 2013 meeting. Travel awards for the 2012 conference in Grand Rapids will also be available. Through the generosity of sponsors and GCMAS membership, students may apply for these awards. The 2012 Program Committee has students in mind. All students are invited to attend the annual student mixer on Wednesday, May 9, which will be proceeded by a career-related tutorial. There will be a podium session dedicated to outstanding student research and a podium session on new tools and technologies. This is definitely a program you won’t want to miss!

To be eligible, when you submit your abstract, mark yourself as a GCMAS Member (2012), then classify yourself as a student member. In January of 2012, register as a GCMAS student member, paying the $10 membership fee. Please do this early in 2012! Student membership requests must be cross-checked and if you wait too long, your membership could be delayed. Only active student members at the time of the 2012 conference will be considered for the Young Investigator award.
