For the past ten years many junior faculty have been successfully mentored at the rehabilitation research grant writing workshop, Enhancing Rehabilitation Research in the South (ERRIS) resulting in NIH or NIDRR level funding. The grant that funded ERRIS has concluded and I am the PI on the natural extension of the ERRIS workshops, Training in Grantsmanship for Rehabilitation Research (TIGRR) workshop. We will have many of the same mentors but we will also be expanding our efforts to provide mentorship in areas such as health services research and other areas.
The next workshop is scheduled for January 15-19, 2013 in Chapel Hill, NC. The link for the workshop is tigrr.bme.unc.edu and I have also attached a brochure. Please consider sending one or more of your faculty, colleagues or students to the workshop and/or pass on this announcement to others.
This 4-1/2 day workshop provides the expertise and support to be successful at the national level in obtaining research grant support. The target audience for this workshop includes junior and mid-level faculty in all rehabilitation research disciplines of Rehabilitation Researchers (e.g., Biomechanics, PM & R, Rehabilitation Engineering, Rehabilitation Science, Neuroscience, Developmental Pediatrics, Neuropsychology, PT, OT, Speech/Language, Neurology, Nursing) who are on the cusp of success in NIH-funded or similar research such as NIDRR, but could benefit from expert mentorship in grant development including choosing the best funding source and type of grant from that source. We also encourage applications from previous attendees of the ERRIS workshop, especially if they are close to submitting a grant or have submitted a grant and need mentoring in fine-tuning the revised application.
We bring together a nationally recognized group of mentors and consultants as faculty, including representatives of federal funding agencies. The workshop provides guidance in grant writing, clinical trial design, biostatistics, informatics, collaboration, grantsmanship, budgeting, and career development through lectures and individual consultation. One-on-one mentorship is the centerpiece of this workshop. We will pay particular attention to following up with mentees and their home institution mentorship team after the workshop to maximize the chance for success and thus develop a cadre of well-trained, rehabilitation researchers whose expertise will foster better rehabilitation research design.
