From March 8th to 10th, 2017, the University of Akron will host a free conference that focuses on the issue of diversity in Biomechanics, Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. The conference is described at http://nsfincludes.uakron.edu. The complimentary registration link is: https://akron.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_cFQ8j6NcyfetaEl.
This promises to be a unique opportunity to discuss approaches for reaching out to communities who are under-represented in biomechanics. Drs. Paul DeVita, Jill McNitt-Gray, Kristen Zhao and others will discuss approaches such as National Biomechanics Day, role of sport biomechanics and ASB's approaches to increasing diversity.
The overall goal of the conference is to provide a "White Paper" addressing the following:
Anyone from the biomechanics community who wishes to share information related to any of these topics is encouraged to contact me at: bdavis3@uakron.edu. There are poster, exhibition and podium slots available for these purposes.
Regards
Brian

The overall goal of the conference is to provide a "White Paper" addressing the following:
- Current Situation
- Metrics related to K-12 to College transition.
- Nature and extent of issues limiting the inclusion of under-represented students in the areas of biomedical engineering, biomechanics and biomaterials.
- Community-specific issues.
- Outreach efforts being led by State and Federal Agencies.
- Outreach efforts being led by national organizations (BMES, ASB etc).
- Approaches within K-12 schools.
- STEM topics that attract interest of K-12 students
- NASA themes.
- Sport.
- Software/gaming industry.
- Biomechanics.
- Biomimicry.
- Biomaterials.
- Biomedical Engineering.
- A vision and strategy for addressing key issues
- State requirements for Stem Designation.
- An approach for aligning activities of the partners.
- A process for establishing shared measurement practices.
- Outlining metrics for assessing progress.
- Approaches for establishing “best practices” among private and public communities.
- Strategies for scaling up “best practices”.
- Potential polices for operating practices, and fostering relationships among partners.
