ORS Orthopaedic Implants Research Section Meeting
On behalf of Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Orthopaedic Implants Research Section, we are excited to announce the first annual meeting of the ORS Orthopaedics Implant Research Section on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California. We also invite you to become an ORS Orthopaedic Implants Section member. Find out more information by visiting the section’s website, www.ors.org/ors-orthopaedic-implants-section.
Of the many possible themes, we have chosen to focus on total knee replacement (TKR) for our first section meeting in San Diego, 2017. Esteemed invited speakers will give twenty minute presentations and each presentation will be followed by an extensive discussion. Please see the program details below.
Topics will be focusing on historical aspects and retrieval analyses of TKR in order to identify lessons learned from historical (failed) and existing designs. Furthermore, a retrospective view on the innovation process will be presented, and whether innovation has stagnated in recent years. A future perspective will be presented in terms of implant design and materials, surgical tools and evaluation methods to improve the quality of TKR. Finally, from a regulatory view point, it will be discussed how CE and FDA regulations affect clinical introduction of implants, and whether the testing requirements and efforts are reasonably balanced with the risks of introducing unsafe devices on the market. The meeting will end with a general assembly, during which we look forward to your contributions to the open discussion, so that together we can shape the future of the section to meet your needs in orthopaedic research.
The ORS Orthopaedic Implants Section was launched August 2016. This section will serve as a unified voice in developing implant related programming is needed to serve these members better. This section was formed with collaborations by the ORS and Implant RIG. The ORS is the most important research platform to bring together experts from various disciplines to foster the multidisciplinary interaction which is required to improve the quality of the implants, ensure that new implants are adequately tested at the pre-clinical stage, that implants are introduced carefully to the orthopaedic market and that the clinical outcome is appropriately registered.
Please do not hesitate to contact myself at Nico.Verdonschot@radboudumc.nl or Bailey McMurray at membership@ors.org. We look forward to seeing you in San Diego in March!
Regards,
Nico Verdonschot, ORS Orthopaedic Implants Section Chair
Bailey McMurray, ORS Section Staff Liaison
