Workshop on Robot-Assisted Rehabilitation in Stroke

Rehabilitation robotics are extensively researched for years and used to augment rehabilitation. This research topic is approached by both engineers and clinicians. Nevertheless, the results of involving technology in Stroke rehabilitation are not impressive. We assume two potential reasons for this. The first is the current use of technology in Stroke rehabilitation. Robots are used so far as a substitute or addition to rehabilitation specialists. What if we use them out-of-the-box? The second reason is the clinical application. If the developers are not fully aware of the underlying processes of rehabilitation and the importance of engaging the patient, technology alone cannot do much. Thus by applying technology in a meaningful way and by motivating the patient, we might achieve better results. In our proposed workshop ( https://ctw-bw124.ctw.utwente.nl/roborehab/ ) the title (use it or lose it) refers to both technology and its clinical application. In line with the proposed topic, we plan to gather a multidisciplinary group of speakers including ethicists, engineers, doctors, and physiotherapists. One expert will first present the results of robotics motor rehabilitation for stroke over the years. The first half of the symposium will discuss how robotic technology can be more creative and outline new trends in robotic stroke rehabilitation and the second half aims to point out how important is the efficient clinical application of robotics. The six experts will discuss each topic and will be motivated to offer experiences, opinions, and facts to challenge the current status quo. The last part of the session will involve an interactive discussion between the speakers and the audience. We hope that this symposium will spark new collaborations between people and create new prospects for robotic stroke rehabilitation.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE APPROACHING SOON

BIOROB 2018 aims to provide an extensive repertoire of workshops and tutorials prior to the conference on August, Sunday the 26^th, 2018. We are happy to invite proposals for half-day and full-day events. Please, find below relevant deadlines:

February 15, 2018: Workshop and tutorial proposals submission deadline
March 22, 2018: Notification of acceptance
August 26, 2018: Workshops and tutorials

Deadlines are set at 23:59 Pacific Time.

Workshops should present and focalize innovative research on emerging and rapidly developing areas at the intersection between biorobotics and biomechatronics. Tutorials should provide in-depth insights into methodologies and techniques that are bound to enable progress in biorobotics- and biomechatronics-related fields. Proposals should specify how the event engages attendees and encourages interaction with speakers that would not be otherwise possible via regular BioRob sessions.

If an invited organizer is involved in more than one proposal, this must be noted sorting proposals in descending order of priority. If multiple excellent proposals are received on overlapping topics, acceptance may be conditional to merging proposals into one single event.

Proposals must be submitted via PaperPlaza (https://ras.papercept.net/conferences/) and must address the following points:

• Type and Duration
• Title
• Organizers
• Objectives
• List of speakers
• Intended audience
• Expected attendance
• Why this workshop/tutorial is not expected to be covered by a regular BIOROB session
• Details of other workshops/tutorials where organizers are involved
• Support/Endorsements
• Special requests (equipment or other issues)
