  • 19 April WEBCAST: LifeLongJoints: Large dataset for assessment of joint replacements

Large dataset for assessment of joint replacements

Conducted from 2013 and ending this year, LifeLongJoints is an EU funded project with the aim of investigating new coating materials and testing methods for joint replacement. Although vast in scope, the project involves very interesting biomechanical research. Both clinical and computational, targeting multi-scale physical and in-silico testing of implants using whole-body musculoskeletal modeling to joint and surface scale wear simulation.

In this webcast, you will hear the efforts to create better joint replacements from the coordinator of LifeLongJoints Professor Richard M. Hall and Professor in Clinical Biomechanics Anthony Redmond talk about the work to analyze and stratify the functional outcomes of total hip arthroplasty patients performing a wide variety of activities of daily living.

Post.doc David Lunn will present the work of creating a large open dataset from 130 patients and thousands of trials and outline the gradual release of the dataset for public use. You will also see some of the first results from using this data for implant testing and stratification of hip implant forces simulated with the AnyBody Modeling System.

This is the first webcast in a series on the outcomes of the LifeLongJoints project. In the next webcast, we will focus on utilizing the clinical data collected for in-silico simulations. From musculoskeletal modeling to simulation of wear of implants.

LifeLongJoints received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under Grant Agreement no. GA-310477
