  • i-FAB 2020 - April 5th-8th, Sao Paulo, Brazil - SAVE THE DATE

As the host of the next i-FAB 2020 in Brazil, it is my pleasure to invite you to join us in this unique scientific venture in the next International Foot and Ankle Biomechanics Meeting, to be held in Sao Paulo and organized by the i-FAB Committee and the University of Sao Paulo. The congress will take place between April 5th and 8th, 2020 and it will happen for the first time in South America. We have the pleasure and the honor to bring this high-level scientific meeting to Brazil and Sao Paulo for the first time ever. This is a great opportunity to visit this beautiful country and discuss the cutting edge research on foot and ankle biomechanics.

The main aim of the bi-annual i-FAB meeting is to promote connections between people interested in foot and ankle biomechanics across different sectors, and to connect disciplines that traditionally might not have a strong biomechanics component. Particularly, the i-FAB 2020 is intended to provide updated and frontier knowledge on the foot and ankle biomechanics, orthopedics and rehabilitation; to enlarge the Foot and Ankle research community by connecting people from academic, clinical and industry fields in different countries; to facilitate the debate on key issues for this community; and to foster seamless activities between researchers and research users.

I look forward to welcoming you to Brazil and Sao Paulo!
    Isabel Sacco

The foot and ankle are subject to a highly complex mechanical demand during daily living and sports activities: any biomechanical analysis shall therefore imply weight-bearing anatomical data. Recently, Weight-Bearing low dose Cone Beam Computed Tomography has enabled to obtain 3D representations and models of the foot and ankle under physiological load in daily clinical use as well as in the lab. This is a fundamental innovation which will strengthen clinical and biomechanical analyses. This special session will discuss techniques and applications of this new technology, both in research fields and clinical settings, for diagnosis, and for planning and assessment of treatments of foot and ankle disorders.

Meet the specialists of this session:
Francois Lintz - International WBCT Society
Alberto Leardini - Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli, Bologna – Italy

Foot ulcers are one of the main lower-extremity complications of diabetes mellitus. Diabetic neuropathy changes the structure of the foot, affecting its function and, consequently, resulting in increased plantar pressures. These pressures are a predictive risk factor for the development of diabetic foot ulcers. Therefore, it is important to implement strategies to protect the foot from abnormal biomechanical loading. This special session will address the biomechanical aspects of the diabetic foot complications, advances in biomechanical assessments and new approaches to the prevention and treatment of foot complications in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Meet the specialists of this session:
            - David G. Armstrong - Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California
            - Sicco Bus - University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam – Netherlands

                    i-FAB 2020 POSTPONED
                    Official Statement

São Paulo, Brazil – 5th to 8th of April 2020

For the past few weeks, the International Committee members and myself, the i-FAB 2020 Chair, have been actively monitoring the situation around the Coronavirus/COVID-19. We have had multiple discussions, assessed options with others currently hosting conferences, and have done extensive research about precautions and safety.

There has yet to be any official determination by the health authorities in Brazil regarding international travel or meetings. However, it became clear to us that postponing the i-FAB 2020, planned for the 5th to the 8th of April 2020 in Sao Paulo, was the right course of action. This was based, in part, on the institutional travel restrictions and quarantines being implemented all over the world. In light of these factors, it is clear that it would be a risk to bring so many people in São Paulo next month and the ongoing spread of COVID-19 and its implications have substantially affected the logistics of the meeting.

While this decision comes at a time of universal uncertainty, we take this action as a preventive measure, aiming at the safety of all participants and employees of the organization, because we take the health and wellbeing of our guests and community very seriously. The potential risks associated with a large gathering as well as the increasing travel advisories restrictions were certainly considerations, and we really hope the community respects and understands our decision.

We are devastated to have to share this news with you. This is the first time in 12 years that the i-FAB meeting will not take place. We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation.

We are committed to do our part to help protect our staff, attendees, and fellows’ biomechanicists.

Thank you so much for your willingness to speak at our meeting and the time and effort you have already expended. We are grateful to all sponsors and staff who have worked tirelessly with the planning of the i-FAB 2020 meeting and who will continue to assist us with next steps for postponing the event.

We are committed to keeping the same conference program, which would mean including the same papers, posters, keynotes, special sessions and pre-conference courses. If you need to change flights, you can use this update, but evidently, at this point, there is so much uncertainty that we cannot guarantee anything 100%.

We are exploring options to reschedule the event at a later time. I hope to be able to inform you of that date soon and we hope you will still join us.

We will continue to work hard to bring you the unique event that all community expected. Though it is true that our April 2020 conference will no longer take place, we continue to strive toward our purpose – to promote a multidisciplinary event that integrates different complementary areas and foster rich interactions between people in order to understand the Foot and Ankle in all its dimensions – FABMAN – Foot and Ankle Biomechanics Multidisciplinary ActioN!

We are sorry that we are unable to see you all in São Paulo this April. However, we look forward to seeing you all at the rescheduled i-FAB. Further updates from the i-FAB 2020 will be on our website www.i-fab2020.com, on Instagram and Facebook. Please let us know if you have any questions.

In closing, our sympathies at this time are with those in China, Italy, and those all around the world who are affected by this pandemic.

Stay safe, and do what you can to help those who need it.

Re: i-FAB 2020 - April 5th-8th, Sao Paulo, Brazil - SAVE THE DATE

                      FAQ

What is the new date for i-FAB 2020?
We are working on this and will let you know as soon as possible.

Is i-FAB 2020 reimbursing registration fees?
Yes. We will offer a full refund to all participants that request one (please email registrationbrasil@mci-group.com). However, if you intend to join us for the rescheduled i-FAB meeting, which will happen soon, you can remain registered and we will be very happy! If you remain registered now and are later unable to attend, we can refund your registration then.

When is the new deadline for papers?
We will extend the deadline and let you know as soon as possible, giving you more time to update and improve your papers.

Can I still register to the i-FAB 2020 meeting?
Yes, the registration fee will be kept the same as it is and new promotions will come soon.

What happens if I cannot come to i-FAB 2020 in the next date? What happens to my paper?
To be included in the i-FAB 2020 proceedings, paper authors will need to register for and attend the conference. Please email us if you have specific issues or questions.

Is i-FAB 2020 reimbursing flights, hotels, etc?
We cannot reimburse or offset the cost of canceled flights, hotels, or any other expenses except for the conference registration. But we know that most airlines are waiving change fees. Keep in mind that even if your flight is not refundable, you can cancel the flight and keep a credit with the airlines for up to a year. Then you can use that credit towards new travel later (often for the same destination.) Make sure you discuss this option with the airlines when you talk to them. As you know, airlines can be tricky to offer refunds or move flights, so make sure you explain to them the reason for your changed travel plans. i-FAB can issue an official letter to all participants to be used for airline cancellations, reimbursements, etc. Please email registrationbrasil@mci-group.com if you need one.
