  • ACL Retreat IX - The Pediatric Athlete - March 17 - March 19 2022

ACL Research Retreat IX: The Pediatric Athlete
    Thursday March 17 – Saturday March 19, 2022
Hosted by: High Point University and University of North Carolina Greensboro
Location: Congdon School of Health Sciences; High Point University, High Point NC

ONGOING MISSION: The goal of the ACL Research Retreat is to bring together researchers and clinicians to present and discuss the most recent advances in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk and prevention across the injury continuum. The Pediatric (pre-adolescent to adolescent) athlete will be the focus of the 2022 retreat and will cover the continuum of injury risk and prevention from primary ACL injury to the short-term and long-term consequences (e.g., secondary injury, post traumatic osteoarthritis) that develop following the initial trauma. Proceedings from the meeting will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Athletic Training, also dedicated to ACL Injury in the Pediatric Athlete.

FORMAT: The format will feature keynote presentations by experts in the field, and podium and poster presentations of original research related to ACL injury risk and prevention in the Pediatric Athlete. Significant time is provided for group discussion and networking. The meeting will conclude with a consensus meeting to identify knowledge gaps and set directions for future research.

KEYNOTE TOPICS AND SPEAKERS (View our keynote speaker bios):
ACL During Growth and Development: Basic Science and Implications for Prevention and Treatment of Injuries”
Matt Fisher, PhD - Associate Professor, Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill

Short-term gain, long-term pain? Joint health after ACL injury”
Laura C. Schmitt, PT, MPT, PhD - Associate Professor of Physical Therapy, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Ohio State University

“Pediatric ACL Injury: How Research is Advancing Treatment and Prevention
Theodore J. Ganley, MD – Bisignano Family Distinguished Endowed Chair & Director of the Center for Sports Medicine and Performance, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INFORMATION: The deadline for abstract submissions is December 6th, 2021. All abstracts must be original research, not previously presented. Topics relating to injury epidemiology, injury risk identification and screening, prevention, short- and long-term consequence of injury, and return to play criteria (outcomes predicting success or failure) are invited. Priority will be given to submitted abstracts relevant to the pediatric athlete.
