    Modeling subject-specific femoral torsion for the analysis of lower-limb joint loads

    Increased or altered intra-articular forces can lead to structural damages to the articular cartilage and the development of osteoarthritis. Altered joint forces are often determined by a combination of excessive overall loading and morphological abnormalities of the musculoskeletal system. The overall rotational alignment of the lower limb is known to play a critical role in the onset of various joint pathologies. In particular, femoral deformities have previously been correlated with hip pain and labral damage, as well as with knee pain and patellar instability. A comprehensive understanding of the influence of femoral morphotypes on joint loads requires subject-specific information on both movement and morphological characteristics.

    In this webcast, Dr. Enrico De Pieri will present a methodology to personalize the geometry of musculoskeletal models within the AnyBody Modelling System according to subject-specific measurements of femoral torsion. The analysis of hip kinematics and contact forces in a cohort of healthy subjects, characterized by a heterogeneous range of femoral torsion, indicates the importance of personalizing musculoskeletal models also in healthy, asymptomatic individuals. Finally, Enrico will provide a perspective on the application of these personalized models for the analysis of patients with pathological lower-limb malalignment in a clinical setting.
