Our call for abstracts is open for the 34^th Annual International Conference of the
Society for Chaos Theory in Psychology & Life Sciences!

We invite interested scholars and scholar-practitioners to present and discuss recent developments in nonlinear dynamical system theory, which includes chaos theory, fractals, transition dynamics, and other complex systems behaviors and related topics. Over the years, the annual conferences of the Society for Chaos Theory in Psychology & Life Sciences (SCTPLS) have inspired and supported scholars from an array of disciplines to look at new ways to develop their theoretical and empirical work in an integrated approach to life sciences.

Nonlinear approaches to research in the social and behavioral sciences can greatly enhance our understanding of the dynamics, patterns, and emergence in our world. The annual SCTPLS conference is the go-to nonlinear dynamics event to report findings, discuss ongoing research, learn new approaches, and meet new friends and collaborators.

We are a multidisciplinary organization. Topics welcome at the conference include applications of nonlinear dynamics theory and techniques to problems encountered in any area of the behavioral, social and life sciences, including psychology, sociology, economics, econophysics, management sciences, pedagogy, anthropology, aesthetics, education, biology, physiology, ecology, neuroscience and medicine. One or more of the following nonlinear concepts must be an explicit part of the presentation: attractors, bifurcations, chaos, fractals, solitons, catastrophes, self-organizing processes, nonlinear mathematics, cellular automata, agent-based models, network analysis, genetic algorithms and related evolutionary processes, dynamical diseases, or closely related constructs. The broad mixture of the disciplines represented here indicates that many bodies of knowledge share common principles because they study common processes that produce similar patterns.

The program includes workshops, invited addresses, symposia, panel discussions, a poster session, and sessions of individual papers. Advances in basic or applied research, developments in theory, reports of empirical results and methodological papers are all welcome. We continue to encourage all nonlinear scientists, including graduate students who might be contemplating or finishing up a dynamical thesis or dissertation, to share their ideas through paper presentations, chairing a roundtable session, or by proposing other alternative presentation formats, such as posters, product demonstrations, short workshops, or debates around controversial topics.

The abstract submission deadline is: May 15th, 2024

Here is a reminder of our exciting pre-conference workshop this year - Datapalooza 2024!

• Are you looking for a way to jumpstart new insights?
• Do you have questions you don't know how to answer?
• Are you looking for new datasets to work with?
• Do you feel isolated as a nonlinear researcher?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you need to participate in the Society for Chaos Theory, Psychology, and Life Science's (SCTPLS) 2024 Datapalooza. Datapalooza is an event that turns the standard conference on its head. It is an opportunity for you to expand the depth of your research by building ongoing collaborations with other interested researchers. Datapalooza brings content researchers together with nonlinear methodology experts to form new collaborations, begin new projects, and open up new avenues of exploration. Over three days researchers will meet, work in new ways on existing projects or start new research, and leave with the beginnings of new research results.

This year Datapalooza will be held in conjunction with the SCTPLS Annual Conference on July 31 in Cincinnati, OH (USA). A special presentation from the Datapalooza attendees will be held on August 2 for everyone attending the conference. The deadline for submissions is June 15.

Global contemporary science is a vast dynamical undertaking comprised of complex social and cognitive structures. It represents a multi-scale, evolving, self-organizing system in which social and cognitive elements are connected through formal and informal flow of information and ideas. In order to help solve increasingly complex outstanding problems and questions, contemporary science has adopted new approaches to knowledge production that are predominantly team based and are less confined by disciplinary boundaries. The study of the character of and the interplay between the social, institutional and intellectual aspects of science has recently received a major boost. In this talk I will showcase some of the studies that use the data from scientific publications to shed light on contemporary research practices, research teams, research workforce, interdisciplinarity, and citation dynamics.

"My research endeavors to elucidate the dynamics of science as a social and an intellectual (cognitive) endeavor by approaching science as a heterogeneous system comprising of people, ideas, documents, instruments, institutions, and policies situated in an historical context. Specifically, I strive to produce comprehensive, yet straightforward models based on theoretical and empirical findings from a wide range of fields (science, technology, and society (STS), science of science, information science, network science, economics, sociology, philosophy, history, etc.) in order to uncover and explain the fundamental principles that govern contemporary science.” Staša Milojević is a Professor of Informatics in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, a Grant Thornton Scholar, a core faculty of Cognitive Science program, and a fellow of Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics at Indiana University, Bloomington. She received her PhD in Information Studies at University of California, Los Angeles.

How Reinforcing Twelve Interactions that Create Social Capital Grows Financial Value in Organizations

The term social capital is often used in organizations, but it is rarely described in detail or quantified as a component of an organization’s financial value creation potential. In this discussion, Dr. Hazy will address this practical and research gap by proposing initiatives along two complementary dimensions.

First, he will propose an initial step on the road to clarifying and quantifying the nonlinear behavioral drivers that constitute social capital and describe how the value of social capital increases, or appreciates, over time and can potentially be quantified. To do this he will identify twelve specific behaviors from the literature, collectively called the APPRECIATOR Algorithm, that individual team members can iteratively enact and also reinforce in others as each team member contributes individually and in collaboration to the appreciation of the value of social capital across various types and phases of complex organizing.

Second, Dr. Hazy will introduce a design for an AI-enabled Work Team Process Engineering (WTPE) platform that supports the gathering, analysis, and use of previously hidden or “missing” human interaction information that can be used to quantify the increasing value creating potential of human and social capital. In addition to supporting the valuation of social capital along three dimensions: asset value, optionality, and portfolio diversification, the platform supports individual professional development by delivering context-specific, personalized smart-coaching insights and opportunities for virtual human mentoring on the user’s smartphone. Importantly, equity is enhanced because each user owns and controls its data, and privacy is secure and protected because each user’s data can only be accessed and used by that particular user.

After 25 years of executive experience in international firms like AT&T and Ernst & Young, Dr. Hazy became convinced that value in organizations is created by working effectively with and through people. He decided to join the faculty at Adelphi University to pursue research that explores how individuals and groups use leadership influence up and down the organizational hierarchy to identify and respond to opportunities and threats, and by doing so, create value for stakeholders. In particular, his research uses mathematics from complexity science and complex network theory to explore the dynamics of individual agency in the context of organized activity within social networks.
