So we (UALR) have just received our new vicon/bonita system but chose to purchase a computer from a second party to fit within the budget. I've got the specs (from vicon) for the computer but was wondering what (where) others have purchased who chose to purchase their own computer.

Re: Vicon Computer
Is it Nexus based or Tracker ? If you have Giganet (Nexus) the network card is important (Intel GT 1Gb) and a simple Quadro graphics card would help. Get one small Hard Disk for the operation system (I use a 64GB SSD hard disk with Winsows 7 64bit and works perfectly well). All data and video is recorded on seperate hard disks.
Hope this helps

Re: Vicon Computer
We build our own since as you alluded the prices Vicon charges for collection machines is quite high for what you get. We're using our motherboard's built in Gigabit network adapter with no problem, I don't think they even make motherboards with 100 connections any more. A Quadro graphics card is throwing money away for this sort of application however, though you will want to go nVidia since they're usually better at drivers than AMD or Intel. We're using a 9800GT and Nexus runs perfectly smooth from a graphical standpoint on our collection computer, though integrated graphics are perfectly capable for post processing. If you go with whatever nVidia's current budget offerings are you'll be just fine.
Whatever you end up buying, though, wipe it clean before using it. All the 3rd party apps that computer resellers put on can potentially cause problems and are just annoying anyway.

It will be Nexus based. The specs on the support website include:
Operating System: Windows 7 (64bit)
Processor: Two Intel® Xeon® Processor (2.4GHz)
Video Card: 1 GB NVIDIA Quadro 2000
Memory: 4GB and above
HDD Configuration: SAS Hard Drives, NON-RAID for 3 Hard Drives
Hard Drive: 300 GB (15 000rpm) (Smaller HD can be used to capture optical data)
Hard Drive: 146 GB (15 000rpm)**
Hard Drive: 146 GB (15 000rpm)**
I was just curious if anybody recommended/suggests other hardware items. Obviously as much RAM as possible and I've not yet looked at the speed for the newer Tera-sized HDs.

Re: Vicon Computer
We have Vicon running on a variety of computers in the lab, some with integrated graphics. The only issues we ever ran into were having the appropriate OS, there were major compatibility issues with Vista that were fixed with Windows 7. A fast second network card (1Gb) is vital, and we have yet to run into any issues with hard drive speed.

In my experience with users who aren't as PC hardware savvy as Dan, the headaches you will save by purchasing through Vicon on worth the added expense. It must be understood that Vicon can provide limited support on PCs purchased through anyone other than Vicon. There are too many combinations of MoBo, CPU, and GPUs for us to test each configuration. Thus, that document can be very helpful in guiding you towards tested configurations.
Again, I would be more than happy to discuss the ins and outs of this. I won't try and sell you one way or another. Our support hotline is 800-745-7325.
