  • Control of limb prosthesis

    Dear all,
    I am going to teach a new course in Control principles of prosthetic limb to Msc students( P&O). I have already prepared some basic materials in control (Ref. Ogata) but this should be some limited sessions.
    As this course will be treaching to P&O students , I would appreciate if anybody could give me a clue to find out proper refrences which are mainly related to Prosthetic control systems.

    If you don't what to go into too much detail I would suggest the following book:
    "Powered Upper Limb Prostheses", Ashok Muzumdar

      Your request does not specify, but I assume you are referring to control of powered upper limb prostheses. If so, I would suggest the chapter "Control of Powered Upper Extremity Prostheses" written by T. Walley Williams in the book "Functional Restoration of Adults and Children with Upper Extremity Amputation" edited by Robert Meier and Diane Atkins. The "Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies" edited by Doug Smith, John Michael and John Bowker also has two chapters that would be helpful: "Components for electric-powered systems" by Craig Heckathorne and "Control of limb prostheses" by Dudley Childress and Richard Weir.

        Thank you Soren,
        I have already read that book. It has valuable information but most of them is related to the signal processing. And, it does not have specific part regarding lower limb.
        As you know, nowadays, some researchers have a great interest in Powered lower limb prostheses and their control systems.

          Thank you Laura,
          Specificly, I am going to teach '' control principles in engineering applications( prostheses and orthoses)''. In other words, basic control theories or models and .... But I could not find even outline for this in P&O.
          I may use Ogata for basic theories but I would like to have more examples in Prostheses.

            You will have a hard time finding any information about control systems as they apply to lower limb prosthetic devices. Since these have been in use for centuries, the O&P community had no interest in developing models to describe how a person with a lower limb amputation controlled their prosthesis. The passive nature of lower extremity prosthetics also leaves little to be controlled.

            Recently there have been some attempts to develope simulations of the soft tissue mechanics of transtibial amputations (easier than transfemoral), but little verificiation has been done to my knowledge. The Research Institute of Chicago at Northwestern University has just begun to look at collecting EMG signals from the residual limbs of lower limb amputees...so any actual use of control system is a few years off.

              Hi Zahra,

              Howard Hillstrom presented a volitional control knee as part of his PhD thesis at Drexel University Biomedical Engineering about 25 years ago. Precious little has been done on this topic. Despite the technological advances since then, the control theory (EMG input, pneumatic output) should still be valid.

              Can you offer any advice, Howard?

                Thank you Kyle,
                I have noticed this shortage , and I hope O&P community will work in this area of research too. In general , textbooks for lower extremity prostheses are not as many and update as upper.
                Anyway, I could find some outlines which will be helpful in classification of engineering control of biological systems.

                  Hi Jim,
                  I have not had the chance to read that thesis but I have read some theses from MIT (espicially Herr's works) in power prostheses and orthoses and most of them have used a precious theories in control.
