  • ISB establishes the David Winter Young Investigator Award

    Dear members of Biomch-L,

I am writing on behalf of the Executive Council of the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB).

In the fall of 2011, we were informed that Dr. David Winter has bladder cancer, and that his remaining time is expected to be mere months. His former students (led by former ISB president Sandra Olney) contacted the ISB with the proposal of establishing a student award in his name to acknowledge David's outstanding contribution to biomechanics over many years and his passion for mentoring students in the field.

The entire Executive Council of the ISB enthusiastically endorsed this idea, as it would be a fitting honor for the author of a textbook that, since the late 1970s, has been at the very core of education in the field of human movement biomechanics; for an individual who is often considered one of the fathers of modern biomechanics.

It is therefore my pleasure to announce that the award for best podium presentation by a student, at each ISB Congress, will now be known as the “David Winter Young Investigator Award”. The award of $750 will be sponsored by the Journal of Biomechanics. The inaugural David Winter Young Investigator Award will be given at the 2013 ISB Congress in Natal, Brazil.

David is still well enough to receive correspondence, but we ask that you do so via Bob Norman, a former colleague at the University of Waterloo, and also a former president of ISB. Bob's e-mail address is norman@jubilation.uwaterloo.ca.

Re: ISB establishes the David Winter Young Investigator Award

    Ton,

I cannot think of a more appropriate way to honour Dave than to have his name forever associated with young investigators in biomechanics. Those of us lucky enough to have been one of his students know only too well how he encouraged and supported our passion for biomechanics. Hardly a day goes by that I do not hear myself echoing something that I learned from Dave, and for that I shall be always so grateful.

    Well-done, ISB!!
