  • 3D editing software

    Dear All,

We have a set of 3D bone scans in vrml (X3D) format. We would like to develop for the students an interactive web page where they could examine an entire skeleton, take a close look at specific bones etc. For example, something similar to what is shown on http://www.real3danatomy.com/bones/dog-skeleton-3d.html in the case of dog skeleton. Can you recommend any editing software (preferably open source, but not exclusively) that would take as input wrml file and allow such creation to be read by a web browser?

Thank you for your responses. Regards, Tomislav Pribanic

    Re: 3D editing software

    Hi Tomislav,

Check out http://code.google.com/p/open-3d-viewer/ (used to be "Google Body" before it was open sourced)

Here's an example of the code in use:

Zygote Body is a free online 3D anatomy atlas. View, isolate, and learn human anatomy structures with Zygote Body.

If you're into bovine anatomy here's another example:

    Best of luck,

    Goodwin

        Re: 3D editing software

I have previously used cosmoplayer and swirlviewer to view vrml files. Cosmoplayer was an IE plug-in but i moved to using swirlviewer as it was a free stand alone viewer that does not need any installation, so can be used on university computers with limited admin rights.

If you are looking for an iPad app I recommend onhandview.

There are a lot of editing software packages, but after trying a few I ended up mostly editing in notepad, it was just as easy as any of the paid packages.

          Re: 3D editing software

Thank you all for your suggestions. It seem that type of SW we could actually use is something like RapidAuthor from cortona3D http://www.cortona3d.com/. Presumably, it allows relatively easy interactive Web creations, requiring no programming skills. Unfortunately, we have received no response from the company after our request to test a trail version.

In any case, if you know any other with similar features, we'd be happy to hear that.

          Thanks again in advance, Tomislav

            Re: 3D editing software

Probably you should have a look at http://www.blender.org/ . It is free, imports X3D/WRL, exports x3d and also has a built in Game engine to test the interactivity. Editing/Rendering capabilities are up there with any commercial counterpart. It is not that user friendly though.
