  • Ankle Tendon's force and stiffness

    Dear all,
To develp a simple elastic model (such an spring) , I need to distinguish the Achile tendon force and stiffness from Tricepce surae muscles in walking. Does anyone have any clue on this?
    Any help would be appreciated!

    hi

During walking I dont no. But you can test this in other situations see this papers

I also remember from another study that can help you in what you are trying to do, please see this paper.

I think measuring the exact value of it should not be that easy during any type of gait as the values of tendon and ligaments are inherently nonlinear. During quiet standing there have been some rough estimation for modeling purposes for example Asai, Y. and Tasaka, Y. and Nomura, K. and Nomura, T. and Casadio, M. and Morasso, P. 2009 with the title: A model of postural control in quiet standing: robust compensation of delay-induced instability using intermittent activation of feedback control.
I assume the spring elastic values stated in the paper are higher than actual values during any type of gait in a healthy subject, though.
        Regards,

          Regards,
Actually you are right. I could not find any direct estimation for modeling purpose. However, in some literatures trying to model and develop prosthetic ankle-foot, they have used torsional spring with stiffness close to 100 kN/m replicating Achille tendon. I have used a simple static model for ankle (by gait data) and the estimated stiffness was close to 120 kN/m which seems abit strange!

            Hi Zahra

You may find the data in our paper of use in determining AT stiffness:

Stokes OM, Theobald P, Pugh N, Nokes L, 2010. The Use of Panoramic Ultrasound to Measure in vivo tendo Achilles strain. Foot Ankle Int, 31 (10): 905-9.
