  • Noraxon EMG v/s Biometrics EMG

    Dear Subscribers,
We are planning to purchase Surface EMG system for engineering research work in India. Two options available with us is Noraxon EMG or Biometrics EMG. Please suggest me which one is better .

    Thank you,

Re: Noraxon EMG v/s Biometrics EMG

Out of respect for the process, I work for Noraxon. For what it is worth, these types of comparisons are frequently done and often they try to compare two different types/styles of systems as if they were/are the same (rarely the case). Many aspects to consider, tethered or wireless, or direct transmission, additional biomechanical sensors, software, digital or analog integration of other technologies etc etc. Regardless of company chosen, there is not one that covers every single thing. Some focus on certain aspects while others are moer flexible.
I would be pleased to discuss off forum if preferred. Todd.shewman@noraxon.com

Re: Noraxon EMG v/s Biometrics EMG

As far as a researcher is concerned, best bio-signal data capture system is the one, having the hardware with recording capability of intended signals with minimum adulteration, and best signal to noise ratio, FOR THE SPECIFIC PURPOSE. The data should need minimum signal processing/filtering.

For ambulatory applications, wire free design logically seem attractive, because of absence of wires, and therefore absence of motion artifacts due to moving wires. Special electrode designs are also available that supposedly record EMG signals better then conventional electrodes.

There are 3 types of Noise, that may find it's way into EMG signals.
1- Internal noise- caused by Electronics and components used, to pick the signal, amplify and transmit (or transmit and amplify)- This depends on system architecture(wired, telemetry/data-logger or wire free), electronic design and quality of components. This is the most important aspect, that needs to be addressed at the time of purchase, because this entirely depends on what system is purchased and can't be controlled afterwards. This noise can not be eliminated.
2- Ambient Noise- due to power line, RF, Fluorescent lights, CRTs and similar sources present in the environment. This can be identified and dealt with.
3- Motion Artifect due to Electrodes-Skin interface and length of the cable between electrodes, amplifier/ADC. This can be dealt with good and innovative Design of the system (for example wire-free EMG probes that record, amplify and do analog-to-digital conversion at site itself) and also skill in fixing the electrodes, subject preparation.

Signal stability is also one of the concern, that also depend on the Electronics involved, but can be dealt with filtering the data between frequency range of signal instability.

I too would be interested in knowing if there are any such studies that compare different products (categorized as per design, like wired, Telemetry/Data logger and wire free types and also between products of different designs), specially quantifying inherent Noise, as mentioned in 1- above, available in the market.

Please post any comparative data, information, that you may get hold of, on this, for the general benefit of members.

      Best Regards,
      Manvendra

Are you using motion capture? If you are using Vicon Nexus you may opt for Noraxon because their solution is fully integrated.

        Sincerely,
        Scott

I would like to suggest that go for Noraxon EMG. It is extensive and does the job quiet well. Helped me in many of my projects.
