  • Thesis Ideas - 2D Motion Analysis

    Hello,

I am a graduate student who is starting the thesis process. I am looking to use 2-dimensional video-based motion analysis to answer a research question in the field of biomechanics. Any ideas that would help me generate a good research question would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Why only 2D?

2D is all I'm capable of doing in the biomechanics lab at my school.

In general it is hard to generate good research ideas from what methods you have available, it is easier to start with a problem you want to solve or something you want to study...

2D biomechanics is interesting as screening tools for injury, see e.g. McLean (2005) and Stensrud (2011). There are also several other relevant publications in the field of ACL injuries. Can you use this in your thesis?
The 2D-Cam method can be used to screen for excessive valgus in elite basketball players, particularly for movements occurring primarily in the frontal plane. This method may also be a useful training evaluation tool when large reductions in dynamic valgus motions are required.

Poor frontal plane knee control has been shown to be a risk factor for anterior cruciate ligament injuries in ball/team sports. It is necessary to develop simple tests that can identify players with poor knee control and among other factors be able to optimise preventive training programmes. The pre …

I could potentially look at ACL injuries. So far, I've been interested in using 2D motion analysis to examine kinematic differences, in the sagittal plane, between the front squat and back squat exercises..

What equipment do you have to work with?
