  • Organic density and volume fraction for bovine

    Dear Friends

I am creating a finite element model of bovine from 3D reconstructed images from microCT. Basically, the assumption is the each voxel in of the bones consists of ash, organic and water. To assign the material property of each element, I need to know the organic density and organic volume fraction ( organic volume/tissue volume) of the bovine.

I know there is a paper of GONG, J. K., ARNOLD, J. S. & COHN, S. H. 1964. Composition of Trabecular and Cortical Bone. Anat Rec, 149, 325-31. which suggests a volume fraction of bovine, but it is quite an old one. I can find any information about organic density of bovine as well.

Could anyone give me some clue here please ?

    best wishes

    Hi Yuan Chen,

in general bovine bone is a bit denser than human bone and is approximately 50 vol% collagen and 50 vol% mineral. additioanlly, it is about 72 mass% mineral and about 10 mass% water when fully hydrated. i hope this helps. there are many articles by currey evaluating bone mineral content from various species.

Re: Organic density and volume fraction for bovine

        Hi Yuan,

Our group has thought about deriving the constituents of bone from microCT quite a bit, particularly in the context of developing finite element models from microCT. A recent paper we published might be helpful to your work.

If you have any questions, let me know and I would be happy to discuss what we have done in further detail.

        Best,
        David

          Hi Yuan,

Thank you for the nice words. I would take a look at the paper by Sidney Lees and John Heeley:

Lees, S. and Heeley, J. D. (1981). Density of a sample bovine cortical bone matrix and its solid constituent in various media. Calcif Tissue Int, 33(5):499–504.

          and also

Lees, S. (1981). A mixed packing model for bone collagen. Calcif Tissue Int, 33(6):591–602.

They report an experimentally measured value of the dried 'solid porous structure', corresponding to the density of collagen, of 1.42 g/cc, which they state "matches published values for collagen molecules."

Hope this helps, or at least gives you a place to start.

          Best,
          David

THanks very much David, that's the one I am looking for.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

            best wishes
