  • Footwear for multisegment foot model?

    Colleagues,

I am trying to find footwear suitable for running that can be used with a multisegment foot. In particular, I'm planning to implement the Stebbins modification of the Carson Oxford foot model. I’d appreciate any insights you are willing to share about your experiences in using footwear in conjunction with placing markers on the skin. Also, whether you think the setup you developed would be suitable for running.

    Many thanks,

Re: Footwear for multisegment foot model?

    Clare,

There are some details about footwear we customized to measure multi-segment kinematics (not the Oxford model but similar) in the supplementary materials of this paper-

Telfer et al., Dose-response effects of customised foot orthoses on lower limb kinematics and kinetics in pronated foot type. J Biomech 2013, 46:1489–95.

Maintaining the structural integrity of the shoe is difficult and will likely be a compromise if you’re cutting windows large enough to cope with anatomical variability at a number of marker locations, but it can be done. Also, extra time needs to be spent when preparing the foot compared to barefoot walking/running prior to testing as the tape holding the marker can come off fairly easily because of the sweat from the foot.

Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions about our set up.

    Regards,
    Scott

Re: Footwear for multisegment foot model?

      Morning Clare,

We have been using the Keen Arroyo II multisport sandals, (KEEN Inc. Portland OR) which are designed to accommodate orthotics in the footbed. We've had to enlarge the heel cutout to accommodate markers, and affix heel markers on wands that extend outward for better visualization. In addition the mesh is cut away. The smaller sandals require more customization.

As Scott mentioned in an earlier post, although structural integrity of the shoe is largely maintained some compromise is necessary. Shoes are sized in half increments and we purchased only full sizes, hence the compromise. To date we are collecting preliminary data so nothing published as yet but so far we've been successful with data acquisition and will begin examining the data shortly.

      Kind regards
