  • Salaries of Human Performance/Gait Research Lab Engineer

    Hello,
I am currently a Research Biomechanist who has worked in a research oriented movement analysis lab for over 10 years, and hold a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering. I am currently in the process of transitioning to a new job in a new lab and was wondering if I could poll the readers of BIOMCH-L to get some information on salary ranges as they apply to Lab Engineers/Managers of labs similar to these? The HR department of my new job is looking for justification of my salary request, and since I often see job postings for these positions on BIOMCH-L, I naturally thought this would be a great place to ask the question.

I understand that just raising the question of salary is a very personal topic for many, so I can appreciate the desire to keep certain information such as the names of persons or universities confidential. If this is true, perhaps along with salary ranges in your responses you could list a general location, such as State/Country, as well as some information on the overall size or of the university? I say this because I assume someone working at a tear 1 research institution in a large metropolitan area would probably be making a larger salary then someone working the same position at a much smaller rural college.

Any information you could contribute would be greatly appreciated. A similar question was raised back in 2000 on this forum, and it sounded from the responses like there were several people interested in the same information. So I think this information would not just benefit myself, but also be helpful to other institutions and job seekers alike.

    Thank you.

    Josh,

You may find that people will be more likely to give you information via a personal message rather than a reply in this thread, in which case, you can then post a summary of any responses without revealing any personal information.

Thank you Dr. Smith for your recommendation. If readers would like to private message me instead, I am open to that. Whether those messages come from employers or employees, I think it would be great to eventually provide some type of summary of the responses to the forum community. Of course, I would ensure with each person individually that proper de-identification has been accomplished to their satisfaction before I publish that info. On the other hand, if they would prefer the info not be published at all, I would honor that request too.

Maybe you could make a google doc form that can be circulated as a survey that does not collect any identification information.

Things like location, school, position, and salary would be useful for us all.

Ok, here is the link to the 7 question survey I've created. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1gaj...YmzD0/viewform

This is the first time I've used google docs to create a survey like this, so bare with me if there are issues. I've tried to maintain anonymity while addressing all relevant questions. While I'm anticipating most answers will come from current employees, I believe those employers willing to contribute will find the questions easy to answer as well.

Thank you again for all that contribute information.

Re: Salaries of Human Performance/Gait Research Lab Engineer

I'd like to thank everyone that contributed to the survey. I am continuing to receive responses, and I can add them to the rest as they come in. So, please keep them coming.

That being said, I mentioned that I would like to post the results of the survey, and I have done so with an Excel attachment. You'll see 4 tabs along the bottom, with one containing all of the responses, and the other 3 tabs related to degree level and listed in order of years of experience.

In hindsight I think I would have addressed the cost of living question a little more differently. Maybe referencing a link to a website that lists a "global cost of living index" for cities, rather than asking Large/Small metropolitan, Suburban, or Rural. Also, since salary is largely dependent on job responsibilities which can vary from position to position, maybe coming up with a generalized list of responsibilities for people to check off would have been a good idea. Nevertheless, here is the attachment. Please feel free to add your suggestions on how to make this survey better if you have any.

              Thanks Josh!

Being that the data is anonymous, can you just share the google doc publicly? That way we can automatically get changes. I'm willing to make a few plots and tables, but i'd be nice to scrape the live data so that more data points are available as they come in.

Again, I'm new to google surveys, but I believe the results are now set to publicly share with those who have the link. Here it is.
