  • Contact areas in the human knee

    Hello All,

    Hoping for a little help,

I'm currently focussing on some Neuromuscular research, and would find a list of contact areas (patellofemoral and tibial femoral) for the knee joint in mm2 by degree of flexion / extension exceptionally useful. I don't have the resources to create my own table, and the literature seemed a little sparse, though some things did pop up in my search, usually focussing on a few degree points (0, 30, 60) for example, rather than the full range that I need, (-4 to 130 roughly covers my data range). There was a useful list of references posted to this forum back in 1994 which I found through the forum search function, but obviously would like something more recent.

In an ideal world I'm hoping someone may have an excel sheet that they worked out in the past, either through measurement, or modelling in FEA that they would be willing to share. Alternately if anyone can point me at an open source table that would also be really useful.

    With kind regards

Re: Contact areas in the human knee

    Hello Steve,

I would like to redirect you to my recent work on in vivo patellofemoral contact areas during knee extension. This is a combined approach using dynamic MRI data with computational modeling to extract contact data. If you want more details, I can be of help at anytime.

This study is a first step towards unfolding the biomechanical pathways to anterior PF pain and osteoarthritis (OA) using dynamic, in vivo, and accurate methodologies. The database provides crucial data for future studies and for validation of, or as an input to, computational models.

Sorry for replying late and I hope you are still interested in these results.

    Thanks,
    Bhushan
