  • Motion analysis based on GoPro movies?

    Hello all,
I am seeking all the information concerning the motion analysis software, ready to work with the files recorded by GoPro HERO 4 (Black) in hi-resolution and high frequency (min. 100 frames/s). Or could anyone share with me their experiences with converting Go Pro files (.mov or .AVI) to AVI files readable by the old fashioned systems (i.e. SIMI Motion) with out any distortions.
    Thanks in advance,
    Marek

    Hi Marek,

Kinovea (http://www.kinovea.org/) should work, as long as you record in compatible formats (http://www.kinovea.org/help/en/index.htm). This program will give you some analysis capabilities as well.

As Federico said, Kinovea is one free option for video motion tracking. Tracker (physlets.org/tracker) is another free video analysis tool.

        Hi Marek!
I support the idea of using Kinovea, although there is no possibility for a "correct" calibration in the software (compared to e.g. SIMI motion). However, you can either apply a straight-forward-milkmaiden approach or write yourself some code applying the correct calibration using DLT (cf. http://www.kwon3d.com/theory/calib.html ). Furthermore don't forget to reduce the lens distortion effects gopro has (https://gopro.com/support/articles/h...n-gopro-studio)
Note: I have not yet worked with Gopro data, would be interested to hear of your experiences and solutions.

Here is some (very old) Matlab code to do DLT calibration and 3D reconstruction: http://isbweb.org/software/movanal/kinemat/. This code does not correct for lens distortion, so you would have to do that before measuring coordinates from the video images.

Re: Motion analysis based on GoPro movies?

            Hi Marek
You may be interested to know that HD formats as coming directly from the GoPros (MP4) are supported directly in Simi Motion since version 9.1. No need to convert files

Latest Simi Motion also includes lens distortion calibration to correct distortion. You can find a small tutorial here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvUQKI-n1fY

Also interesting for you to know is that latest Simi Motion includes markerless silhouette based 3D Motion Capture. This means you do not need any markers, but get full 3D motion capture data just based on several calibrated videos. We already worked with GoPros with this new technology. See a small sneak demo video here https://www.dropbox.com/s/tqlolcuyws...GoPro.mp4?dl=0
You can find other demo videos from working with markerless tracking here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m338zah3j...UoOT5tEia?dl=0
You can find data on accuracy for markerless tracking here http://www.simi.com/en/references/re...pe=rss%27a%3D0
We are just finishing a thesis also on accuracy studies using only 4 cameras GoPros cameras comparing it with the marker based standard. This will be on our research page soon as well

If you are only interested in 2D Tracking there is a method called image processing enhanced marker tracking which allows to use latest marker tracking without actually using markers. You can find a small demo video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdRa...ature=youtu.be

Given all the innovations in Simi Motion that evolved over the last years, especially new capabilities for markerless and hybrid tracking (see the thesis about accuracy for more info or call us) I wouldn’t agree with the term old fashioned describing the solution. Maybe the version of Simi Motion you have is very old fashioned and would need an update to use latest technology…..

If you are just looking for file format conversion then try Handbrake, an open source format converter that runs under Windows operating systems:

Re: Motion analysis based on GoPro movies?

If you are interested in open source solutions, there is a remarkable markerless tracking system built into Blender.
                Quick video tutorial here: https://vimeo.com/79032879
Also FFMPEG can convert anything to anything at the command line, which is very efficient when you have multiple videos or a sequence of images to process consistently.

                  Dear Biomech-L Friends,
I am getting more and more surprised seeing all the new comments posted by you every day. Let me thank especially Federico, Karl, Stefan, Ton, Philipp, Edmund, and Edward.
I am going to follow all the suggestions, which you have shared with me. I will keep you updated. We will be in touch (marek.rejman@awf.wroc.pl).

                  Marek.

                  P.S.
                  Dear Philipp,
You are completely right I shouldn’t have used the term “old fashioned” while referring to the Simi Motion. This is not what I meant. I would like to express my deep apologies to you and all the people who have worked and developed the Program. I have worked successfully with the Simi Motion for many, many years.
