  • Biomech of Yoga Sun Salutation Pose

    Dear all,

We at MGM Centre of Human Movement Science (MGMCHMS), India are trying to figure our spine biomechanics associated with 'Suryanamaskar' or 'Sun salutation pose' (ref: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IUyY9Dyr5w)

Has anyone explored such complex yoga poses using Vicon? Is there any methodology we can refer to? What about 'plug in' models available which can be used?

I'd like to have more opinion on this topic.

    Thanks.

What you need is a good Spine kinematics model. I don't know about Vicon but OpneSIM provides such model. See https://simtk.org/projects/lumbarspine.

Here is another OpenSim model that might be beneficial. Its a full body model with the major trunk muscle groups and degrees of freedom in the lumbar spine. https://simtk.org/projects/fullbodylumbar

We have worked closely with the developers of The MotionMonitor, a real-time 3D biomechanics software, for integrating our Vicon camera systems for real-time collection of marker and analog data. The MotionMonitor offers a "Spine Detail" module which allows the user to define, track and analyze the spinal segments as a multi-segment model: http://www.innsport.com/applications/spine-detail.aspx . Please contact them at support@TheMotionMonitor.com for further information or questions.
