  • Request: Wikipedia page for ASB

I was recently surprised to learn that there is no Wikipedia page for the American Society of Biomechanics. There was one instance in which having such a page would have been useful to me in promoting the upcoming annual meeting, so I looked into creating one. It turns out, however, that Wikipedia prohibits people from making articles about themselves or their organizations, even their non-profit organizations, because of the conflict of interest that it would create.

If you are a non-member of ASB with Wikipedia skills and are so inclined, I know there are many in ASB who would be grateful to you for creating a Wikipedia article about ASB. I am sure that ASB members would buy you a beer or two in Brisbane or Boulder if it did not represent a conflict of interest in the eyes of Wikipedia. There is plenty of source material on the ASB website that would be useful in creating an article, and references to ASB may be found in several textbooks on Google Books.

    Thanks for considering this request.

Re: Request: Wikipedia page for ASB

    Hi Steve,

    I've started a draft article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:...f_Biomechanics

Everyone: please feel free to log into Wikipedia and add more information; my understanding is that it won't be "accepted" without a significant amount of content to demonstrate the "notability" of the topic.

I'd write more but have to run…

    Hope this helps,
    Will

Thanks, Will! I'll work with ASB Communications Chair Robert Catena to try to get others in the biomechanics community to contribute to the new draft page you made.

      Best,
      Steve

I've now got feedback from Wikipedia, and they want as many references from independent sources as possible about what ASB is and what it's impact has been.

If you have any examples of reference to the ASB in print could you please post them here?

        best regards,
        Will

A couple months ago I added to the references list fairly substantially, and I'm please to announce the American Society of Biomechanics page is now officially on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americ...f_Biomechanics

It was fun going through some of the news article to see what people have been talking about in relation to the conference. In some sense, it's a shame that Wikipedia requires "independent" news articles as evidence that ASB is note-worthy enough to include in their pages. It's a good reminder that we should always do the most we can to publicise our work broadly.

          Cheers,
          Will
